    1. AOL blocking e-mails
    2. Joan, I've already been in contact with Community Action Team that linked me to a special AOL technical area, so that this technical area could initiate an investigation with some sort of super-secret area in AOL. I was told to wait 72 hours to see if my screen name would be allowed to send an eMail loaded with eMails. No guarantees as to whether or not my screen name will receive such permission. My alternative is to go to one of the 3 Internet-based eMail accounts and send the eMail of eMails from that Internet-based eMail account to the other Internet-based eMail accounts where I save these special eMails. I could send other eMails, but not this particular eMail that included all the eMail addresses in my eMail address book. Walter- I can see where to AOL this might look like you are mailing lists of address for spamming. You cold always break it down and try sending 5 or 6 separate emails each with a portion of the addresses you are saving. OR...you could contact AOL and explain that you are not a spammer and see if they will allow you an exception. Joan

    1. AOL blocking e-mails
    2. AOL has recently started blocking the sending of eMails that have more than a certain number of eMail addresses within that eMail. I use AOL 5.0 and because, from time-to-time, it has been necessary to reinstall AOL 5.0 and this entails creating a new address book, I protected the eMail addresses in my address book by placing all the eMail addresses (about 250 or so) into an eMail and sending this eMail to several Internet-based eMail accounts that I created, as well as saving this eMail with all the eMail addressees as a WORD document. Then, without any notice, this past weekend, when I attempted to send this eMail with 250 or so eMail addresses inside this eMail to my Internet-based eMail accounts, AOL would not allow it to be sent because this eMail was "Rate Limited". 2. I wonder if anyone on this list has seen this article from the LA Times? To be fair, AOL claimed that this was a technical glitch which was fixed in a few hours, but it does show that blocking e-mails based on their content (not just a sp*m score) is technically possible. Wilson -------------------- AOL Blocks Critics' E-Mails -------------------- By Chris Gaither and Joseph Menn Times Staff Writers April 14 2006 It's never been easy to win a fight against people who buy ink by the barrel. The same may be true about those who buy bandwidth by the terabit -- as a coalition fighting Internet giant AOL discovered Thursday. Transferring data is relatively easy, if you use a gedcom file. As corresponding secretary and editor for the local genealogy society, I have imported gedcoms from people all over the country. Never had a problem with them attached to email, or whatever the parent program was. Donald- I've also recommended RootsMagic to Sharon--I agree with you and was also a long-time Family Origins user before using RootsMagic. I personally think it is about the best genealogy program around for most users -- unless you need all the features of TMG which is more than most people need. RootsMagic (like FO before it) handles sources better than most programs and also creates nice webpages. Joan

    2. Sharon, Go to _www.familysearch.com_ (http://www.familysearch.com) and down load PAF for free. It is really quite a good program and you sure can't beat the price. Central Standard Time, DULCICH6@aol.com writes: Believe it nor not, I have purchased 2 new genealogy software programs already and not used them. The thought of transferring all my data is daunting (my main uds file is over 9 Mb) and I'm not easily daunted by new programs. I'm also uncertain which program I would like the best. I have been very, very happy with Generations format and abilities and rather sad when it was sold and then discontinued. Since I just bought a new computer, I doubt that I'll invest in an Apple and purchase Reunion. I've got to find something that will work for me with my PC. Sharon

The idea is to pick up where Weymouth's list stopped. Sharon

Pacific Standard Time, JRAYMOND651@aol.com writes: As for Generations, I purchased v8 when it was first released and then installed the patch to make v8.5.1. I don't know how large your uds file is, but you should seriously consider "biting the bullet" and switching to another program as Generations is a dead program. I'd suggest either Legacy or TMG. Legacy is easier to use as TMG has a very long learning curve, but that is your decision. The other option is to invest in an Apple computer and purchase Reunion, which is the Apple version of Generations. Your uds file should import into Reunion with little or no problems. Switching to either Legacy or TMG will involve a lot of work to correct import problems. -- Believe it nor not, I have purchased 2 new genealogy software programs already and not used them. 1. Re: [AOL-RW] ATTN: Generations software users
    2. Sharon, I was previously using AOL v9 Optimized SE and the problem was not there. I cannot recall if the file AOLDial was in that version or not. Either the file was not present in that version or was and a change was made to the file. As for Generations, I purchased v8 when it was first released and then installed the patch to make v8.5.1. As for your current situation, I'd make a suggestion. Deselecting the AOLDial file via msconfig>startup means you will be running in selective start-up mode, which is not a big deal. However, everytime you upgrade a program or install a new program you run the risk of encountering the same "disappearing data syndrome." Once you have stabilized your system, i.e., eliminated this problem, make a written copy of all the checked files in msconfig>startup. Then, if the problem reappears after an upgrade or new installation, you have a reference point to work from. Jon Raymond St Paul Park, MN Web site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~raymond/
