    2. Thanks, Joan. I was afraid of that! :-) It started before this thread began -- I wondered if the word "illegitimate" was the problem. Or maybe the spam filter reads German, which I don't? For now I can keep trying to retrain my filter but it sure seems to be a slow learner. I must've hit "this is not spam" at least 20 times so far. Vanette

Vanette ---- Every once in a while this happens--in fact I just had to pull a message from NJ-L out of my spam folder. It is either something AOL considers spammy in the subject or message but not so bad as to warrant blocking. I'm not sure there is anything you can do about it--it is probably related to a thread that is being posted to the list and the problem will most likely be transient and disappear when the subject/thread changes. FWIW, the message copied to this list didn't go to my spam folder--which makes me think it might be subject-related. Joan

It is better to use "illegitimate" In German church books you find "unehelich", "illegal" and "ausserehelich", "illegitim". All means the same. (An old German word for a child from an unmarried couple was "Bangert".) Sometimes the couple married later and the child was bound to this marriage. In most cases the pastor was not friendly with the mother who had a child and no father. Some of them looked to punish that wife "for her sin" in all possible allowed ways. When it asks if I want to download now, I usually say no, as I have already downloaded when I read it. Now, however, when I go back and want to look at something saved on my pc folder, I cannot get it to download. I know I probably have it saved somewhere else, but I just wondered if there is a setting so it would download and/or open again?? Thanks!!! Terri Terri- Unless you are using "automatic AOL" you are not downloading mail to read it when you use your AOL email program--you are reading it on AOL's server. The system AOL uses is IMAP rather than the more conventional POP3 where you actually do download your mail to your computer to read it. Of course, I'm assuming you don't have your mail program set to save all incoming mail to your PC and that you are choosing to selectively save individual messages. The "download now" option is for attachments though--not for email. Unless you say YES to download the attachments they are not going to your computer and they are being lost. If you do download them they go to My Documents by default. Joan

    2. I noticed the Macromedia Flash message a few minutes before I saw that someone else was having trouble with it. It was so maddening, I just went to "Add or Remove Programs" and removed the only thing that I saw that name on. I'm sure that was not the wisest thing to do, but I couldn't work around it. I even tried clicking on both of the choices, but nothing happened. The minute that I removed that program, it quit. Can I function without it? Velma

    1. RE: [AOL-RW] tcp/ip
    2. George Elting
    3. TCP/IP is the standard communications protocol for the internet. Short for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, the suite of communications protocols used to connect hosts on the Internet. TCP/IP uses several protocols, the two main ones being TCP and IP. TCP/IP is built into the UNIX operating system and is used by the Internet, making it the de facto standard for transmitting data over networks. Even network operating systems that have their own protocols, such as Netware, also support TCP/IP. This probably just means the connection didn't work on the first pass... It happens with dialup. Since I have a broadband I never have a problem with failed connections. -----Original Message----- From: Frty9rgal@aol.com [mailto:Frty9rgal@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, April 26, 2006 8:57 AM To: AOLers-RootsWeb-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [AOL-RW] tcp/ip Every once in a while when I log onto AOL, after going through to step 7, verify password, it goes back to step 2 & says "connecting TCP/IP". Then the connection stops. I have to click on cancel which puts me back to the log on screen & then it zips through quickly & I get online. Can someone explain this to me? I'm using dial-up & 9.0 Security Edition SE. Thanks, Judy
