Thank you to everybody who replied to my request for help on the above. I have found a small software program that will do exactly what I want. It will put all e-mail addresses, e-mail messages and favourites into Outlook Express in a usable format. The program costs a few British pounds but well worth every penny. It is brilliant and easy and quick to do. For me, it moved 654 e-mail addresses, 4,422 e-mail messages and 286 favourites. If anyone wants details of the website then please contact me off list. Once again many thanks for all your advice and input. Jean MCCarthy nee Moore http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jeanmccarthy36/
And another way to transfer favorites or ensure against their loss ... slowly but surely: 1. Create a new e-mail. 2. Drag each favorite into the new e-mail. (drop down one line after each "drag") 3. When complete, sent that e-mail back to yourself. Might even send a copy to a friend for safe keeping. Nice thing about this method is that they're all "clickable" in that e-mail. Time consuming but it works. E-mail addresses, open your address book, click on 'address book options' than choose the print option. Dave

Jean, Have you asked your new ISP? They might have a way to do this. Jon

Milton, In your message Wed, 24 May 2006 to AOLers-RootsWeb-L@rootsweb.com you asked . . . How do I transfer bookmarks from mac aol 5 [sys 9.1] to the next highest aol version in sys 10.3? I will be using classic mode in 10.3 but want bookmarks in 10.3 Safari and aol. I made the same move several years ago from OS-9 to OS-X using the same Macintosh computer. I just got a current AOL software CD from the Post Office with "AOL for Mac OS X" and installed in on my computer. My address book, Favorites, and Buddy List were migrated to the new version of AOL for OS X on my computer and it updated everything to the OS X operating system. I use AOL under OS X and still have some older software that requires the Classic OS-9. The classic software just starts up under OS-9 and the newer software starts up under OS-X. It's all transparent to me. Hope this goes smoothly for you. It will work if you have any of the Macintosh computers with G-4 or G-5 CPU's. Classic OS-9 is not available in the newest Macintosh computers using the Intel CPU's. Scott Wagner Macintosh and Reunion user
That sounds like an excellent idea, but how do we change our name for genealogy use. The aol techs seem to mess up more when you use them than repair the pc. Each time I sign on to aol, my aol screen pops up without me haveing to do any thing and it does it again right over my emails and games also without me signing on. It is vert annoying and no tech has been able to help me with it. ew
If you haven't done so, I suggest you take advantage of the number of user names available to AOL users, and create a user name for genealogy use, and never do anything else with it. No financials, no shopping, not even any product browsing. That was you can be absolutely sure that any message coming to that user name purporting to be about Pay-pal or anything else of that type is SPAM. Don Clark

Botwinick botwinick@aol.com botwinick@alumni.rowan.edu MEBotwinick@alumni.temple.edu http://hometown.aol.com/botwinick/myhomepage/index.html Milton- Let's give this a bit of time to see if one of our list members who uses a Mac can help out. I'm assuming that on your old Mac using AOL 5 that the browser bookmarks/favorites were stored ON your computer? If so, the normal procedure would be to transfer your Organize folder over to the new computer and insert it into your new version of AOL. Once you get it into the new system the bookmarks should now be saved on AOL's servers which would prevent this problem from happening in the future. However, I have to add the disclaimer that I'm not familiar with the Mac operating system--or systems, I should say since Mac has changed and your new Mac is actually running a version of a UNIX operating system--which is completely different from your previous Mac. I wish I knew more about Computers. I have been with AOL since May of 1995. Patricia.. Patricia, Thank you very much for responding and letting me know that I am not alone in seeing that the Tech's at AOL (either in the USA or elsewhere) are not as knowledgeable and confident as they used to be. I probably joined AOL about the same time that you did (1995). At that time, I was a complete "idiot" in my lack of knowledge about computers and how to deal with them. My computer sat here for six months without me doing anything with it because I was "afraid" of it. I guess that you could say that I was "fortunate" in that my children "shamed" me into learning how to use it. I wanted to set the example that "yes, you can teach old dogs new tricks." I discovered that, for me to use the computer, I had to try something different on it everyday to learn how to use it. I do not know how or where I found that Gen-Newbie at Rootsweb was a "GOOD" place for beginners to be--it was, by far, the best thing that I ever did. I joined that group oh so many years ago and still am a member. I occasionally feel that I know what needs to be known about computers and do not read every one of their postings. However, I still come up with LOTS of things that I do not know how to do, and I will ask members of the Gen Newbie group. They never fail me! I ask, and someone on the list has a really good answer for me. If you are not a member of this group, join. Don't be ashamed to ask any question that you want--whether you think that it is stupid for you not to know how to do something. They even had to teach me how to cut and paste, how to keep two windows open at the same time, etc. I did not do this when I got my filing cabinet back, but in hindsight, I think that it would have been a good idea to make a "back up" copy of my computer before I tried any of the steps to restore your filing cabinet. Whenever you reinstall a version of AOL on your computer, there is a folder added to your desktop that has all of your "saved" files from an earlier version. Open the folder, find "organize," click on "copy," locate your newest version of AOL, organize, and paste it into the new version of AOL. Patricia, before you do any of this, I suggest that you wait and see if someone else on this list provides you with a better method, or ask the "folks" at Gen Newbie what to do. With everything that has gone on with me regarding AOL, etc., I have decided that the tag line below my name should be "a dummie in cyberspace." Keep this in mind, whenever you read any of my posts. Re: phony e-Bay PayPal e-mails, got the following from e-Bay and an exerpt is forwarded FYI: In the future, be very cautious of any email that asks you to submit information such as your credit card numbers or passwords. If you are ever concerned about an email you receive from eBay, simply follow these steps: 1. Open a new Web browser and type www.ebay.com into your browser address field to go directly to the eBay site. 2. On eBay, sign into your account and click the "My eBay" button at the top of the page. 3. Check the My Messages section located at the top of the My eBay page. If an email affects your eBay account, it's now in My Messages. Any email sent to your registered eBay email address from eBay or from another eBay member via eBay's member-to-member communication system will now appear in My Messages. Just remember, if you get an email to your registered eBay email address that looks like it's from eBay about a problem with your account or requesting personal information, check My Messages first. If it's not there, it's a fake email. If you still have any doubt about whether an email message is from eBay, please forward it immediately to spoof@ebay.com. Do not respond to it or click any of the links. Do not remove the original subject line or change the email in any way when you forward it to us. If you have already entered sensitive personal information, financial information, or your password into a Web site based on a request from a spoofed email, you should take immediate action to protect your identity and all of your online accounts. We have developed an eBay Help page with valuable information regarding the steps you should take to protect yourself. http://pages.ebay.com/help/tp/isgw-account-theft-reporting.html To review eBay's new tutorial about Spoof Emails, please see the following Web page: http://pages.ebay.com/education/spooftutorial/ To help you better protect yourself from fake eBay and PayPal Web sites, we have developed a feature for the eBay Toolbar called "Account Guard." Account Guard includes an indicator of when you are on an eBay or PayPal Web site or a known spoof (or "phishing") site, buttons to report fake eBay Web sites, and a password notification feature that warns you when you may be entering your eBay password on an unverified site. To learn more about the eBay Toolbar with Account Guard go to www.ebay.com, click on "Downloads" at the bottom of the page, and then click on the "eBay Toolbar" link.
