I usually just stop trying for the time being and go back later with no problems. I didn't contact AOL because I thought it was a problem with Myfamily.com or just a connection issue. It doesn't happen very often and so I don't think of it as enough of a problem to contact anyone. I'll try using Internet Explorer next time, but I prefer not to use it. I believe that AOL is a safer browser. Bettye
Vonda, You did not mention what version of Windows you are using. First, I'd check for any Windows updates and install them. If that doesn't work, then maybe the best alternative is to access MyFamily.com via IE. I wouldn't count on AOL's "tech support" for any help unless you are lucky enough to get a tech that works in North America! I recently reinstalled AOL and everything seems to be working fine (after my son-in-law finally fixed my "blue screen of death" problem) except when I try to view a photo on any of the Myfamily.com sites. or am I not receiving any mail from this address?
In May I used AOL's computer checkup on line it worked fine. Now all I get is the download this program screen and when I download it another screen comes up saying the download was corrupted. Is this just me or what? Sharonmc2002
There seems to be a lot of confusion about how this works. 1. It will not work if your e-mail window is maximized. Look at the three boxes at the right corner -- not the top row, but the next one. On my computer, this line says "File Edit Mail Community...", etc. If the middle of the three little boxes shows what looks like two sheets of paper, good. If it only shows one sheet, you're maximized. Hold the cursor over the middle box, and a balloon should come up saying "Restore Up" or "Restore Down". If the balloon says "Restore Down", click on the box. 2. Now you can drag the edges of the window close to the left and right edges of the screen. Be sure to drag when you see the double-ended arrow. 3. Now grab the top bar of the mail window -- NOT with the double-ended arrow. Just put the cursor on the bar, left-click, and drag the window down until the ads disappear. Then move the cursor up to the top edge of the window, just when it changes to a double-ended up-and-down arrow. Now left-click and drag the top of the screen up as far as you can. Now you should be able to read your e-mail without those @#$%^&* ads! Wilson
Well, the ads have appeared with a vengeance. No longer can I move the screen so that they don't show. I did discover the following trick. Read the mail on Internet Explorer. Can't do anything about the ad at the bottom of the opening screen listing the emails, but once an email is opened, the add appears on the right side and I can move that screen over to hide the blinking, flashing, totally irritating ad. Just don't move too far, or the bar on the right moves beyond being able to use. Virginia ________________________________________________________________________ Check out AOL.com today. Dear Sharon, Thank you so very much for your reply. I feel dreadful that you are helping me whilst you are on holiday. At the same time I am very, very grateful that you care as much as you do about helping us on this list. I followed your instructions but failed in following the complete path that you provided. My Computer > C:\> documents and settings > All users > Everything went well until the next part (Application Data) This is nowhere to be found on my computer. Not even using the search facility. I tried pasting the folder from my desktop into what I thought was the correct organise folder but it does not seem to have worked. No matter how I tried I could not complete the steps of your instructions. So I tried Norton Go Back but that would not go back far enough. Then I tried System Restore with the same result. What galls me is that it turns out the fault was on the telephone line and the phone company (BT) cannot come out until the 15th June. AOL are kindly posting a new Broadband modem out to me just in case that was at fault. So I didn't need to uninstall and reinstall AOL after all. Grrrrrr....... The good news is that I had saved a back up copy of my favourites on my computer so I have been able to restore those at least. It is just my e-mails now that I would like to recover if that were possible. If not, it is not a disaster as I keep the most important ones in a journal which I have got backed up on my external hard drive. I also put them into a folder than I can open in Outlook express in readiness for when I have to leave AOL in three months time. Thank you very much indeed for all the help you give to myself and to all of us on this list. You are truly a star and a most helpful and unselfish lady. Thank a million. I hope that you have a wonderful vacation. Please don't bother about this little problem of mine until you are home again and well rested. Thanks a lot. My operating system is Windows XP Home. ---------------- Sorry to take so long to answer, but I'm on vacation! I try to check in daily, but these past few days have been crazy and I'm exhausted at night. Anyway............... The following 'operation' is done with the AOL program closed. Open your Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer!) and navigate to & locate the newly installed 9.0 Organize folder. Here is the path on Windows XP: My Computer > C:/ > documents and settings > All users > Application Data > AOL > select your previous AOL > organize Since you just did a new install, your organize folder will most likely be empty. Now Navigate to your desktop (using windows explorer) and open the folder 'AOL saved PFC' by clicking on the little + sign then right click on the organize folder and select 'Copy' Now navigate back to the Organize folder in the AOL program (using windows explorer) and highlight it. Right click and select 'paste.' You can also use drag and drop but I find the Copy and Paste easier! When you click on paste, you will receive the following message: ""Confirm Folder Replace: This folder already contains a folder named organize. If the files in the existing folder have the same name as files in the folder you are moving or copying, they will be replaced. Do you still want to move or copy the folder?"" Your choices for response were: Yes Yes to All No Cancel Select YES ALL this transferring is done using Windows Explorer. Don't try to do any of it directly from the desktop or by opening the AOL program. Sharon
Hello Sharon, thank you for your response. I should have mentioned which operating system I am using. My operating system is Windows XP Home. Thank you. Jean McCarthy nee Moore http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jeanmccarthy36/

Joan: I have been closely following your instructions for removing the adds at the bottom of my emails. The most annoying one at the moment is the damn chicken running back and forth. I simply cannot get my screen to do what you suggest. That is, the page moving down to cover the adds. I place my curser at the top and hold it down and move it down the page but nothing happens. I cannot get anything but the curser - no double pointed arrow. Is there something I am doing wrong. Thanks. .......jane, Maryland

(At least I had to use both the arrow and cursor for the latter.) Am I correct? ----------- Nope. The procedures for hiding the ads are identical. 1) Use the curser to grab the Title (colored top) bar of the affected window (mailbox or individual email). Place the point of your curser within the colored top section/bar and click and hold. 2) Move the curser and the entire window will move with the curser. 3)Place the window where you cannot see the ads (below the bottom of your screen). 4) Now move your curser slightly upwards until it becomes a double sided arrow. 5) When it is double sided, click and hold again and pull the top upwards to the size you like. 6) Go to the Window menu at the top of the AOL screen and select: Remember Window Size and Position Sharon

Perhaps what is needed is a single posting with a subject line such as "How to Hide the Ads" that details the procedures to hide the ads in both windows. Jon Raymond It is sort of the same for both--in that you use the arrow and dragging to MOVE the window where you want it to hide the ads and then you use move the cursor until it becomes a doublt pointed arrow on the top dark blue bar and then stretch (resize) the window to suit your taste. Then in either case, you need to use the Window menu to REMEMBER window size and placement. Joan
