    1. Re: [AOL-RW] can not open AOL
    2. Joan, We have found the problem. My husband called Dell and received wonderful customer service. Took almost 2 hours, and had the computer taken apart. After a variety of tests, we discovered that the modem was bad. Dell is sending us a new modem. I want to let others know about Dell's helpfulness because too often we complain about service at AOL, and when someone does something good we tend to forget to mention it. I was very impressed by the time and patience of the customer service rep. Our computer is still under warranty (we did not think it was). Library is closed tomorrow, so don't know when I will be back. That triggered a memory cell. About 2 weeks ago, some of my list mail would first come in looking encrypted, and I would clear it off and open the e-mail again and it would display fine. It did this randomly for about 4 or 5 e-mails and hasn't acted up since. The RWR seems to be behaving the same way (encrypted) for others, but not for me. For those who have received the encrypted RWR e-mail, try clearing it off and reopening several times to see if it will spontaneously display correctly. Woody

    1. Re: [AOL-RW] can not open AOL
    2. Joan, Thank you for responding. I am using the computer at work. Later, if it is open, I will go to the library. The tech said I was able to "load" AOL but could not "launch" it. I was getting the blue screen which said AOL and showed the logo and could not go farther than that. I was not able to get to the sign in page. We were advised to get a new disk and reinstall AOL. When I tried to do that, I got to a point where it said that the computer had a different language than AOL. I called the tech again, (waited about an hour by the way) Tech advised that new disk might be corrupt, so tried another disk and the same thing happened. At that point I was told something was wrong with the computer. Now I am wondering if I did the right thing by uninstalling AOL. I ususally have a hard time getting everything back. I am concerned with what went wrong with my computer for no apparent reason. Nothing was changed, added, etc from the last time I had been on AOL until my son tried and could not get on. 2. In a message dated 7/7/2006 5:25:54 AM Eastern Standard Time, FloridaFox@aol.com writes: Last nights news said that AOL will offer free services for those customers using broadband. They will depend on ads for their profit. The dial-up users will pay about $26 per month. They expect 25 million dial-up users to switch. So now we know why they don't care what users want. I should add that I have not searched the web to verify this. (Joan responds:) I think that may have been a slight misunderstanding. AOL has an agreement that we've talked about previously on this list where they are offering a combined DSL service plus AOL for the same price (combined) as the price of dialup alone. That may be what the news story was saying. It is actually a lot cheaper for AOL to offer their service if they don't have to provide the access so it makes sense for theme to move in this direction. Joan +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ In Oklahoma City, there is much concern about this, because it has 900 employees at an AOL call center that may be eliminated when AOL drops its subscription service, and AOL becomes similar to Yahoo and Google that relies only on advertising for income. The local paper says, "In its report, the Wall Street Journal said AOL would offer its entire menu of services, including e-mail, free of charge to anyone with a high-speed Internet conection." The paper goes on to say, "In response to an inquiry about the Wall Street Journal story, AOL spokeswoman Tricia Wallace said the company is 'not commenting or confirming anything in that article'". Here's one of many articles out on the topic: _http://www.teleclick.ca/2006/07/aol-working-on-free-broadband-internet-plan/_ (http://www.teleclick.ca/2006/07/aol-working-on-free-broadband-internet-plan/) For more articles, go to Google, enter "aol", select "news", and enter. 1. Free AOL on Broadband?
    2. The business news channel (CNBC) discussed a possible new business strategy by AOL, wherein AOL would be providing free access to those who access their AOL account via Broadband, with their revenues coming from advertisers, not from these subscribers. Those who would access AOL via dial-up would still have to pay AOL a monthly fee (thereby encouraging these dial-upers to switch to Broadband). It was suggested that AOL might do this to prevent further erosion in the AOL subscriber base. Regards, Walter Greenspan Great Falls, MT & Jericho, NY
