    2. Hello Gerri and other listers; I have been told by AOL support person that one of the advantages lost by going the "Free" route is that of phone/tech support. It is not available to those who switch to the free plan. One must consider how much this feature is really worth in one's own circumstances. That's what I was told. Seems there are many stories being told since the big news. Bill in Denver

    2. Hello Again, I've just had another revelation......I went to my Master Screen Name and went to Help > Accounts and Billing and after answering the security question clicked on several of the links to check my account information. It shows my account listed as: Discount test, Unlimited/$9.95 Now I'm wondering........what does the word "test" imply? Is this going to be only a temporary price break for a "test period" and then we will have a price increase again for dial-up service? As the old saying goes....."The large print giveth, and the small print taketh way." Marilyn

    1. Re: [AOL-RW] AOL Plan Changes
    2. Here is the thing that is bothering me: On the window that comes up when you go to Keyword Change Plan the heading is - Broadband Members - If you already have a broadband connection you can move to AOL's free service online. Please select your plan. The plans listed under this heading are the AOL Free Service and AOl's Basic dial up Service for $9.95. Notice that nowhere does it say anything about those who now have dial up. Sounds as though those are only choices for Broadband members. Sure hope I'm wrong since I made the change and I'm on dial up. Vonda In a message dated 8/9/2006 9:24:20 A.M. I currently have AOL 9.0 SE with dial-up: 1) I can change to the $9.95 per month option and keep dial-up with no change at all in current services; 2) If I later change to Comcast to connect to AOL, the AOL service is free. I wouldn't change ISP, just the method of connecting to AOL. Thank you very much! Paul Paul- I believe so. AOL did send around a list of things that would NOT be included in the free plan--such as tech support, but the resources would still be there that we are accustomed to. When you use another ISP (such as Comcast) to connect to AOL you are not using their bandwidth and yet you are providing eyeballs to read their ads--so it is a win-win situation for them and they don't want to lose the number of people viewing their pages. Joan ==== AOLers-RootsWeb Mailing List ==== It is helpful if you include the AOL version number you are using when asking a question or presenting a problem on the list. Also specify whether you are using a PC or a Mac (operating system) and whether you using AOL in the USA or elsewhere--give your general location.

    2. I changed to the $9.95 plan yesterday and I asked if I can continue to use my same AOL software, and he said yes. I have AOL 9.0 Security Edition SE. Now I'm reading the information (below) that says AOL Security Suite. What is that? A different software? Am I going to have to download new software? and I won't be able to use my 9.0 any more? 1. DIAL-UP for $9.95 opportunity to existing customers.
    2. Perhaps, some on this list do not understand that many plan prices including the 17.95 plan is still in effect for thousands of subscribers of Dial-Up. How that happened was months back when the majority of Dial-Up customers were charged $26 and higher in various parts of the USA, and thousands found out they were being charged for BROADBAND and DSL access they did not have. All those reductions of those fees to customers with Dial-Up resulted in the roll back to $17.95 a month. That seems to be history now, but ONLY if you use the KEYWORD option or make personal Phone calls to AOL. CURRENTLY if you use the Change Plan at your KEYWORD tab, the following will be displayed only if you SELECT the $9.95 option. YOU must select Change to $9.95 to read the following data, but before you click that $9.95 option, it gives a warning notice, that a click will change your plan. AOL Basic Dial-up $9.95 This plan gives you unlimited dial-up Internet access from AOL. This Plan includes: > 24/7 live customer Support by phone, chat and e-mail > AOL Security Suite > 7 AOL Screen Names > Unlimited photo and e-mail storage > 200 + Radio stations with 70 XM radio stations > UNLIMITED dial-up Internet access Please Note: This price plan will go into effect on your next billing cycle date. You will still be under your current plan until this change becomes effective. > You will be responsible for any other charges you might have incurred since your last billing date as well as any outstanding balance on your account and any premium services to which you have separately subscribed. > An additional $5 monthly charge will still apply if Premium services or additional fees are paid through your checking account or telephone bill. > > > > > > The above message should explain or answer many questions being posted by those who currently have Dial-UP plans with AOL. I know all questions will not be answered that may exist. on our list. It is my personal speculation that this plan of $9.95 probably is going to change in the future, as AOL has never remained the same over the years of its existence. Remember it is your choice to increase your personal expenses for Broadband and DSL Now access to AOL for those will be free of additional fee as long as you use AOL Software and versions that can access Broadband or DSL. > JOHN in CA The AOL software and its e-mail system hopefully will remain and improve as the months go with less world wide staff that has been announced in the media.

    1. TIP for AOLers on cable/DSL
    2. TIP for AOLers on cable: One of the neat things about having Outlook Express with cable along with having AOL mail is that one can forward one's own received AOL mail over to the Outlook Express account for viewing. Why do that? When one receives forwards with attached pictures and background music in an AOL account, one has to download the attached pictures first. The background music can't be heard at all. All one has to do is forward the AOL e-mail over to one's Outlook Express account, and all of the attached pictures are viewable with no downloading at all, and if there is any background music, one can hear it just fine. Also, if the attachments are PPS (powerpoint), WMV, or .MOV or other, in Outlook Express one can just click on them to run the files, and not have to download them anywhere. So, when I receive forwards like the above in AOL, the first thing I do is forward them to my AOL account. Saves time and trouble. Woody

Gail Vacaville, CA No--that really isn't the case in that if you used ANY ISP you would have to pay to use the service to get your primary connection to the Internet. Those who already have a connection are not a drain on the system because they are not using AOL's bandwidth to connect. They are merely providing eyeballs to view the ads AOL is getting paid to serve up. Joan

    1. AOL Announcement - FAQ
    2. In AOL's list of Frequently Asked Questions #3. leaves me wondering .... "3. What Don't I Get for Free? There will still be a monthly charge to use AOL to connect to the Internet, and we will offer several reliable and affordable options, on both dial-up and broadband. These options will include access to our 24/7 Live (telephone) Customer Support, which is not available with our free services. Additionally, we will offer various a la carte products and services, many of which we will announce this fall." They say they will offer several options ... I take that to mean more than two. And I do wonder what the "a la carte products and services" will be and how much they will cost us. In some places they say the changes will take place in September and here they use the word Fall which takes us a little farther into the year. And why do I feel as if I, as a dial-up user, will be paying the bill for anyone else who will be able to use AOL at no cost? Gail Vacaville, CA

    1. Re: [AOL-RW] Two accounts for AOL, plus Comcast
    2. It is possible to pick up mail from AOL using Thunderbird and then sign onto AOL using the AOL software whilst Thunderbird is still running. I've done it a couple of times this week to see whether 'free AOL' has crossed the Atlantic. It has always been possible to use Firefox as a browser whilst the AOL software is running. This may be an option for VAndA121 (sorry I'm not sure if your name was on the original message) to explore.
