    2. Joan, There was another block?....sigh Maybe that explains why I just got five digests from the Cumberland list, not in numerical order, either. Jon Raymond St Paul Park, MN Web site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~raymond/

Connie It really seems to be that mail is coming through from the new list server now on about a 30 minute delay --probably trying to catch up. We may be in for a LOT of old mail from these lists for a while now--I'm told there are 50,000 old posts queued on the new server waiting to be delivered to us AOLers. So keep checking your mail frequently to avoid a full mailbox. Joan

CA-CENSUS-LOOKUP] GUTHRIE] TRAILS-OF-TEARS] And Now AOL-RW Got many to go, but glad it is now flowing. I did per advice in the Help Desk post call AOL tech. I told him why I was calling. His response was that it was not my fault. I told him I already knew that. That it has happened every time RootsWeb changed services. That many people felt forced to get other than AOL addresses so they could receive their mail. Then asked if I could read him a paragraph concerning this loss of mail. He said yes. So I read him the entire Help Desk paragraph. When I was through he said he would and that he did send a report on it. I hope you receive this letter and much thanks for all you do! Jeannie :) .

    1. [AOL-RW] Address book work-around for migrated lists
    2. I've done this for two migrated lists that I subscribe to as digests, and it seems to work OK. 1) add LISTNAME-request@rootsweb.com to the address book as the primary address; 2) add LISTNAME@rootsweb.com to the address book as the secondary address; 3) give the address book name listing as the prepend. 4) save it! What this does is to assure that the digests aren't sent to the spam folder. In addition, when I send an e-mail to LISTNAME, the correct address is autocompleted. This keeps the address book from getting filled up, and makes posting easier. Wilson

    1. [AOL-RW] Admin: Our list has been successfully migrated...
    2. We are now operating under the new list software -- we'll see if AOL cooperates and delivers our list mail to us timely. Remember to check spam folders and MOVE the mail out by clicking the THIS IS NOT SPAM link if you do find list mail there. Thanks! Joan, admin

    1. Re: [AOL-RW] Delayed and lost messages
    2. Or when "good" mail is in the Spam folder, foward it to Mylegitmail; of course, that may not be a good address now, but I used to use it. I have even forwarded mail to the Postmaster and asked them what was up. Of course, that was not Rootsweb email, but the same should apply.

This time around the request to whitelist the new server was made well in advance but what AOL is telling the RootsWeb people is that even then there is a different whitelist for NEW servers that have not yet been proven to be non-spammers. So the most effective thing you can do to get this server accepted is check spam folders regularly and click THIS IS NOT SPAM for any list mail you find there. As a side note, this list didn't get migrated yet--which is probably why you are still receiving the mail reliably. Joan

    1. Delayed and lost messages
    2. It should not be a surprise that message from the new Rootsweb server are being delayed. In the last 3 to 4 years Rootsweb has changed ISPs or servers a couple of times and each time AOL has not recognized the change or it has not been coordinated well between Rootsweb and AOL and AOL considers the Rootsweb mass of mail SPAM and chucks it into the trash. I remember periods of up to a week where there was no mail from the many Rootsweb Lists that I follow. Fortunately everything was available from the Rootsweb Archives. Let the message drought begin, been there, done that, and maybe getting ready to do it again. Don't bother to call Rootsweb Help Desk in India, when you tell them that your are having problems with genealogy messages from Rootsweb, they ask . . . " What is genealogy?"

    1. Re: [AOL-RW] AOL 9.0 and scrambled links in Rootsweb mail
    2. THANK YOU! for this tip! I have always been frustrated, and have never been able to figure out how to get rid of those stupid _ _'s and ( )'s around the URL. Marilyn -------------------------original message---------------------- In a message dated 8/16/2006 3:37:26 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, writes: AOLers using AOL 9.0 get their URLs scrambled with a dash ("_") prefix and suffix, and then the URL is repeated with parenthesis around it. There's a way for AOLers (with AOL 9.0) to prevent that from happening: Before you hit the "Send Now" button, right click on the screen and on the popup menu click on "Compose as plain text". ----------------------------------- You can also just right click on the active link (BEFORE you send, of course) and ask to remove the hyperlink.

    1. Re: Subscription
    2. I received my bill for my yearly subscription day before yesterday. I called AOL and told them that I wanted to be changed to the new rate and have the unused portion of my subscription refunded. They first told me that they couldn't do this but when I complained they changed their mind. They agreed mak e the change and refund me for 11 months. However, they told me that it would take 2 to 3 billing cycles before they could make the refund. I thought that this was totally ridiculous, but they won't budge from it. Since I didn't want to have the charge just sitting there on my credit card, I contacted my credit card company. They agreed to take my complaint as an overcharge and put it on hold for 30 days and then bounce it back to AOL if they hadn't made it right during that time. I hope I don't lose my account for doing this. We'll see what happens. Bettye

    1. Re: computer freezing
    2. I have been having the same problem with my computer and AOL for a few days. Yesterday, my AOL failed and restarted about 5 times in as many minutes. Thank goodness they have changed something so I don't lose whatever mail I am reading when it suddenly fails. I have a program that helps by re-allocating my RAM. Because of this program, I can see what my current RAM is at all times. I have 512 installed. When AOL is running, which is most of the time, I only have about 200 RAM, but at times it goes extremely low and that is when I start having the freezing up problems. While I was typing this my RAM dropped to 15 and then was re-newed back to 198. I am wondering what is using so much RAM. I don't run the computer check very often so I guess I will do so now. I will also write Senior Newbie about this problem to see what they think.

    1. Admin: If all goes well...
    2. we should see our list be migrated to the new software in the coming hours. RootsWeb has been working very hard to resolve the problems we've been having with the mail delivery to AOL from the new list server. Since the RootsWeb list server we will be moving to is NEW even though it IS white-listed with AOL I'm told we still might experience some "issues." I've learned that AOL has two types of white listing--one for old trusted proven non-spammers and the other for brand new servers that are not yet proven. Being a new server our list will be going through the new server white list which can cause delays in delivery for a short time and can result in some or all of the list mail going into your spam folder. Therefore, after the list migration it is imperative for you to check your spam folder and if you find list mail there BE SURE TO CLICK THE *THIS IS NOT SPAM* link to send the list mail to your inbox. It is VERY important to help train the filters and let AOL know that this new server can be trusted. So please remember this. Also--when the changeover comes, if you have the list name in your address book on AOL be sure to remember to change the list name to delete the -L from the name as the list will become aolers-rootsweb (with no -L). Thanks! Joan, admin
