While I was still on dial-up I frequently had that problem - and I have stayed with AOL-7 as I don't want all the fancy graphics that come with the later versions. The thing that really made me mad was the notice which said "If the problem persists go to Keyword "System Response"" which you can't do if your system isn't responding!!! If you can possibly change to broadband I really recommend that you do it. I "converted" about a month ago after resisting for a couple of years. What a difference! 2. I think part of the problem is that with Windows, they often give you stats of bare minimum RAM you will n need to run a particular version of Windows without much consideration as to what OTHER programs will use on top of that. This is especially true for those using notorious memory hog A/V software which is always running in the background -- especially Norton. For those using Vista, I think 3 ro 4 GIGs or RAM is about what you would need to expect Windows to play nicely with several programs running too--you can get by with less using XP. 3. Depending on the version, AOL has progressively become a "graphic heavy" program. Also, depending on your installation choices (and some are not chosen by the user but are "forced" upon us), you may have various AOL components loading at Start-Up. To see the Start-Up group, on Windows click Start> Run > (type in) msconfig > (tab) Start Up ... that opens a list with check boxes... most will be checked if you've never been in here before. You can read each one's "path" and look for what aol has put in your start-up. You can choose some to not load at start-up but just read up on what each one does. Dial-up modems make AOL a huge pain. I wouldn't even try it anymore. I'm on cable and it often says "not responding." The reason is, AOL is eating up RAM memory. Every keystroke click command (open this program... read this email... visit this website) has to be processed. Since AOL is a RAM-hungry program, any other commands for other programs/actions then competes with AOL-- who will get the RAM Memory first! So if you have to stay on dial-up, limit your other requests to the PC. Allow AOL to open fully before doing anything else. If you click on a link, allow the AOL web browser to fully open before asking for another task. Keep other programs closed if you can. For example, I might be working on pictures.... but AOL and image programs both consume RAM. Limit image sizes if you are sending via AOL. Let aol "warn" you if an email contains images, so you'll know it'll take a couple minutes to load. Above ALL else, when AOL says "not responding" TRY to sit on your hands--- don't even try to click on anything or "make" AOL respond. Watch your harddrive light... if it is ON, your PC is trying to catch up on commands / demands on the RAM. As one program finishes the last command you made, other programs grab the RAM and complete doing what it needs to do. Even Windows and Internet Explorer have a piece of the RAM usage... so even if you only open AOL, your PC might be expending RAM on other tasks the PC must do to be running. If AOL bogs down, use Task Manager (it might take a while to open if all your RAM is in use-- I call it a spike) to "end program" on AOL. I think AOL also uses a web "accelerator" (as many ISPs do now). It's intended to "speed up" the Internet. That can really cause a drag on PC RAM, in my experience. I notice it the most with games and heavy graphic web sites or AOL content. Judy On 7/26/08, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: > > In a message dated 7/26/2008 7:41:56 A.M. 2. Ema, You have to be a paying member of AOL to have access to the free McAfee service. Here is the URL where you can choose which McAfee you qualify for: http://daol.aol.com/security/? There is Premium Security for those on the Dial-Up Advantage and High-Speed Essentials plans. There is Basic Security for members on the Basic Dial-Up plan. For those that are not members you are offered a special Edition from AOL that has an "exclusively discounted" annual fee. Sharon ------------------------- In a message dated 7/25/2008 1:12:00 P.M. These ads often contain "tracking" spyware, so if you click an Ad, the company gets info about your click, like the page you accessed the ad. If the message concerns adware, that means any of the Ads above could be "affected" and not work well IF you do what McCafee is suggesting / asking if you want to do. I do NOT know McCafee, but you wrote: "Power reg schedular adware nusience and then it says if I take it off it might stop other programs" With Norton, when it says something about ADWARE and that if I choose the recommended step, the Ads / video ads might not work right. I thought, that's no big deal. But it could have 2 effects, such as (examples): Every video even from TV News Stations often begin with an Advertisement, then plays the video. If the Ad does not run, it often won't let the video (you wanted) to run. So, some videos you want to see might not ever run--it would stay at a blue, green, or black video area. 2nd example: Many game sites run an Advertisement, then loads the game. Some changes you make to Antivirus or Anti-Spyware/anti-adware can stop those ads from loading, but game companies often link running the ad to loading the game, so if you change McCafee, some games won't work (maybe). ALL the choices you make CAN MAYBE prevent some content you DO want from loading. So how do you know WHAT to do? First, look for a "More Info" link and read the info. Second, copy the most important part of the McCafee Message and Google it. Like, you wrote: "Power reg schedular adware nusience" -- Google exactly what it says, spelled the way it spells it, and see if anyone has asked about it on a Forum, or if McCafee has a Knowledge Base article about it. Third, think / consider what the message is really saying. Is it saying it will change a PROGRAM (like Word, Excel, a banking program, a program on your harddrive)--- OR--- Is it saying the accepted change could affect one or more Web Sites and their content. Most often, you will NOT want to "change" how a program on your harddrive works--unless you really know what that change will do. BUT, if it relates to a WEB SITE or sites, think to yourself, "Will this change affect something I might want to access on a Web Site?" If it concerns Adware, A LOT of the time, it might not matter at all. Fourth, on the PopUp asking "What do you want to do" is there a way McCafee can UN-DO what you say NOW, and later put it back to the way it was before. Is there a way to back-up your Registry FIRST before accepting a change? Is there a place in McCafee Firewall to LATER "accept" whatever you have denied/restricted today? For example, I can go look at Norton's Firewall to see what PC Programs are "enabled" or what web sites I have blocked... or whether I have blocked ALL Web pop-ups or not. Fifth, (I hate this), most often, you MUST make a choice in order for the dumb message to go away. If you say NO today, think "Can I go back later and choose Yes if I change my mind?" If you have the right to change your mind, you can say NO today, but later you can choose yes. Look in McCafee, read McCafee's Help area, try to get familiar with what McCafee can do. *****I will OFTEN say NO DO NOT DO THIS if I do not yet understand WHAT the dang message really means or what my "yes choice" might do to my PC or ability to use my machine. NO is always best IF you just do not have enough info to decide. You ALWAYS should think whether a change might affect your PC's registry. Almost ALL good programs (Word, Shockwave, Real Player, Adobe, etc) DO make changes to the PC Registry. But bad spyware/viruses also try to change the Registry. Both good AND bad "schedulers" CAN and often do change the Registry. Always LOOK and think about WHAT is this "program" -- if is it something like Adobe, you can probably say "yes" without negative effects. Note: If you do say NO but later, learn you do need that item, you can always call McCafee for help to re-do your decision--McCafee techs might be able to undo you "no" decision---but it might be harder to undo a BAD "yes" decision. I know this is long, but it summarizes what I have learned with using Norton AV. There often is not an easy answer. Always Google to read what other people learned--good and bad--from the choices they made and changes they made when they chose "yes" or "no" to an AV message or any "request" popup sent to a PC from any PC Program or from any Web item. How? As I allow AOL to open, I often switch to Notebook or another program to type while I wait. As AOL (or any program opens), the PC usage fluctuates and if you do a keystroke at the moment the PC almost finishes loading AOL, guess where your last keystroke *might* end up (sometimes)? Yep, right in AOL's password box, adding one more innocent * mark in your otherwise correct saved password! And, if you hit CAP LOCKS (accidentally or on purpose) at that precise moment, you might end up with a correct password with a great big letter at the end. If you get an invalid password screen, try erasing your **** from the login box. Make sure cap locks are OFF. Re-type your password in the box and try again. I, too, thought AOL was "changing" my password but after the 2nd time it happened, I knew it was my own typing at that second AOL finished opening its program. Who knew a letter to my sister would stick an extra keystroke in my password ;-) Judy

    2. John- About the only other possibility other than a stuck CAPS LOCK (the passwords ARE case sensitive) would be a virus or ketstroke logger trojan on your computer. Sometimes they come up with a box that LOOKS like AOL's official box for retyping your password but they are designed to gather your password for purposes of hijacking your account. You mention that the spyware runs--which is fine--but you also need to be sure you A/V software is updating. McAfree chimes and puts up a box to confirm updates almost daily if you are using the AOL McAfee. Joan In a message dated 7/24/2008 3:01:16 P.M. 2. John, This happened to me last week. I tried to log on 4 times and kept getting the popup box with the slurred word asking me to change my password. I KNEW that my password was correct because I had just logged off a few hours earlier. When I looked down at my keyboard while trying to log on for the 5th time, I noticed my CAPS LOCK light was on. I don't know how that happened.....maybe the cat walked across the keyboard while I was away and turned it on. I assumed that AOL passwords are case sensitive so when I took the Caps Lock off, I was able to get online with my regular password....no problems.
