You'll find getting on AOL to be much easier. You'll get on AOL faster, and you can stay connected to AOL all day. You can stay connected in the background while you work on something else. If you travel somewhere, you can get on your AOL using another computer by using web mail. You can also concurrently use Gmail web mail, or Yahoo web mail, and still use your AOL as well. You can even use Outlook Express with your ISP, and still also use AOL. You can have all of your e-mail progams open at once -- AOL, AOL web mail, Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook Express, and jump instantly from one to the other. Well, maybe that's a bit more than you'd want to do, but -- back to the question. No, you'll be connected to AOL the same way you were before, but faster and no interruptions. I think I got broadband 2+ years ago. Using AOL all those years, I was a fearful ninny, afraid to "go" out of my comfort zone. So I thought I *had to* continue using AOL software; thought it would be easiest; thought it would be fastest; thought my browsing would be the safest. First time I used Internet Explorer as a stand-alone browser, I was astonished about how much more web content I could *easily* find. Even with my AOL browser settings set to show all content, sometimes, I couldn't find the same pages. AND, AOL's freezing got on my nerves! After a while, freedom! I even set my "homepage" to my gmail account via Internet Explorer. If I want web content now, I hardly ever use AOL's search / browser. I'm on IE much more and much longer than I use AOL. I go check mail via AOL software, just because I like how the software's mailbox "feels/looks" (personal opinion). Before, I also liked to see the news items on the AOL Welcome screen, but I can get the same content through AOL web and not have to deal with AOL software's "acccelerator" and AOL's freezing / hourglass. Still unexplainable, AOL goes through slow-downs (seemingly) after I've been on the software a long time, especially with AOL games--almost like AOL's accelerator gets stuck and instead of making a nice online experience, it instead freezes all activity. Two years+ into broadband, if AOL said it would block its own software from loading and everyone had to use AOL web, I wouldn't care a bit. >From fearful ninny believing AOL was the only way to get on the web, I'm finally free. LOL The only reason I haven't just deleted the software is I still like accessing my mailbox there. My opinion, Judy PS someone will likely remember the name-- I can't. There used to be an Add-on for chat rooms that hosts used in AOL chat rooms (Power-something or other?) I do miss that Add-on program, but of course, I don't do AOL chats & AOL took away the ones I did like. Days of nostalgia about AOL Hosts and Guides and "chat riots" from 8 to 10 pm Friday nights -- lol. Joan, I think you are right about that. I store my favorites on my computer. ThereforeI don't expect them to be there when I use www.aol.com so I've not given it much thought. However, you are correct about it being a different browser. Sharon --------------------------------------- In a message dated 7/30/2008 2:10:22 P.M. 1) Broadband + AOL software To use AOL. click on the AOL icon and sign on as you normally would. The only change would be that there is no dialing of telephone numbers. The connection box beneath your password now says TP/ICP. Use AOL as you always have. 2) Broadband minus AOL software To use AOL, open the Internet Explorer or whatever browser you use. Dave- Using broadband with AOL software installed is no different from using AOL with dial up except that you can generally stay logged on all the time. You can use the AOL browser or any other features you normally would use with the AOL software. Using AOL without having software installed is more like using hotmail or yahoo webmail and accessing everything from the Internet as you would do if you were not an AOL subscriber. Most people find webmail to be much slower to use whether with AOL or another provider. Joan In a message dated 7/30/2008 4:54:16 P.M. Kay, If I understand you correctly, your "connection service" is changing to a broadband (always "online") service. So, you can access AOL either by (1) opening the software and signing onto AOL via the new broadband or (2) opening your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, whatever) and going to www dot aol dot com, signin, and open your mail. Your AOL mail will look the same. Web AOL has slight differences. You can also choose to add something like gmail (www.google.com and go to the mail link to sign up ). It's free. It holds thousands upon thousands of mail for *forever*. gmail has "auto" sorting of mail so, for example, it can sort RW Mailing List mails as they arrive to your box. Set up and using the mail is easy. If I had more time, I'd switch ALL my mail to gmail. Kay- I've been doing that with Comcast cable and AOL since 1999--so I can say it works very well. You don't need to use AOL's webmail--you can use the integrated email and use the software just as you do now but instead of having the sign on option to dial a phone number to connect you connect via TCP/IP connection--which is pretty seamless. Once connected you can navigate as you always did including accessing your email. Joan In a message dated 7/30/2008 12:13:01 P.M. Whatever ISP you change to it is very easy and apart from a uch quicker service I would have thought that there were no pitfalls along the way. Regards Judy Elkington

What I have noticed is that a couple of Rootsweb list-admins seem to have their lists on "moderated" on a permanent basis, which does lead to an apparent delay in mail delivery - but that isn't an AOL issue. Jeannie, The Welcome screen I see at www.aol.com and what I call the OLD Welcome screen are the same. In fact, they should be the same (shouldn't they?). Maybe I'm wrong-- before I sign in on the Web address, the screen I see is the OLD, same as I set in My Preferences on the software. If I'm not signed into the Web (to get mail), would My Preferences still apply? Anyway, the NEW Welcome screen that occassionally appears is NOT the one that shows on the web AOL. Hi Sharon :) Actually it was me Jeannie who wrote the below. To me for days AOL has had a whole lot of technical difficulties. It is not the first time. In the last 6 Mos I have filed many a System Response concerning sending mail. I have been a member of AOL since my first computer in 1996. I have gotten so disgusted that I often think about leaving. Since I recently received a price increase I think about it more. AOL is not what it once was. Far from it.
