    1. Re: [AOL-RW] OT: MS SP3 (Woody)
    2. Woody Woodworth
    3. Judy, My particular case is that somehow the registry had been set so that it would not accept SP3. I had discovered that daily my computer would try to download SP3 automatically, and then give up and leave "as is". I tried to manually install, and that wouldn't work. Turns out there was a small percentage of XP computers that had that particular registry problem blocking SP3, and MS had a "fix". (Ha!) It consisted of copying an executable program in Notepad, and then running the program to change the registry. It advised backing up the registry, and advice told me how to save the registry in "restore". The program did not work. Restore did not work. My USB "safe to unlug" notice stopped working, AOL stopped loading, and a few other small things like "restore" aren't working quite right. I'm going to reformat and reinstall XP to get everything working right again. So, in my case, SP3 simply would not install. If your SP3 installs, you should be OK. And in my case, I need to learn a better way of backing up the registry before I mess with it again. 1. Re: [AOL-RW] aol stalling and login problems
    2. Every time this subject comes up on the list about AOL and routers and AOL changing passwords, etc. I get confused as to exactly what you are talking about. I have used AOL to connect to Comcast cable since 1999 and NEVER, not ONCE, has AOL ever been involved with my password or username to access AOL. I ALWAYS just sign onto AOL using my AOL username and password as I used to do on dialup. It is completely independent from my router and cable modem. Could you explain this situation in more detail? Are you specifically talking about those DSL cases where AOL was involved with your DSL provider to access AOL via Broadband--the service was arranged through AOL originally? I can't imagine why otherwise AOL would be involved with your password or username you use with your broadband provider. My router connects to *Comcast* and has nothing to do with AOL. The only time I termporarily lost access to the Internet was once when I changed my account with Comcast. They had to reconnect it (reopen the connection) for the new account. 1. Re: [AOL-RW] Witholding Letters
    2. Tigger- I would ask that list admin to provide evidence such as a bounce showing they are blocking AOL or something from their website (a link) indicating a block. I actually wonder if the list admn got one of those uncaught bounce notices saying joey is blocking mail from [email protected] where one AOL member is blocking mail from another list poster. If the list admin didn't understand the block was placed by a single AOLer on her list--then she might mistinterpret the bounce to mean AOL is doing the blocking and not an individual. 1. Re: [AOL-RW] OT: MS SP3 (Woody)
    2. Judy- We had a discussion about SP3 for XP a while ago on the SENIOR-NEWBIE list and the upshot of the discussion is that for MOST computers SP3 will be fine and you should download and install it. However, there was a problem with SOME computers I believe mainly ones that had AMD chips as opposed to Intel chips -- but the chips were not the real problem. The problem was how some manufacturers installed the operating system originally. I believe HP was mentioned as one manufacturer who installed XP on new computers through an "imaging" method that isn't approved by MS. If you had one of these computers where XP was improperly installed (but working fine) until you installed SP3 then it would put you into an endless boot loop and you couldn't reboot your computer. :( I THINK MS has resolved this problem and now SP3 can be successfully installed on any XP computer. I just suggest creating a System Restore point before doing the install. Warning - it takes about 3 hrs to download and install even on a fast connection - unless you have the pay for the fastest connection. 3. ADDENDUM: Because my puter's messed up with from MS SP3 and the registry fouled up so that my AOL won't reinstall properly and hangs (AOL techs can't fix), I'm having to use AOL web mail on my desktop. What I have found is that I can remain logged on all day concurrently on all of the screen names (5) I use, and just click on the tab at that bottom of the screen for the screen name I want to jump to. Saves having to log our and log in for each screen name on web mail. So that means you can be logged on concurrenlty to all of your e-mail (Gmail, OE, etc) and jump from one to the other instantly. And also while doing all that and also using IE, you can tab (in XP) from one open web page to the other instantly. As someone else said, you're gonna looooove cable/DSL. Woody -----Original Message----- From: Woody Woodworth <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Wed, 30 Jul 2008 8:58 pm Subject: Re: [AOL-RW] switching from dial-up You'll find getting on AOL to be much easier. You'll get on AOL faster, and you can stay connected to AOL all day. You can stay connected in the background while you work on something else.    If you travel somewhere, you can get on your AOL using another computer by using web mail.    You can also concurrently use Gmail web mail, or Yahoo web mail, and still use your AOL as well.=2 0You can even use Outlook Express with your ISP, and still also use AOL. You can have all of your e-mail progams open at once -- AOL, AOL web mail, Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook Express, and jump instantly from one to the other.
