What are you doing when the freeze-ups happen. What happens if you click the button for DETAILS as to the cause of the problem? Freeze-ups and disconnects are probably two different issues. How much disk space and RAM do you have and what do the system reqs tell you about available resources? Also, do you know whether the disconnects are the fault of AOL or your DSL service provider? AOL generally isn't the problem with disconnects when you are bringing other service to access AOL. It is usually a problem with your service provider. I have a good way of testing this because I'm always logged into the RootsWeb IRC server which requires being able to connect with servers outside my own computer. If I get knocked off AOL (which is a very infrequent occurance) and I'm also disconnected from IRC -- I know it isn't AOL's problem but rather Comcast. Looking at the lights on your DSL or Cable modem and Router can also give you a clue as to the source of the problem. Joan In a message dated 8/6/2008 3:24:05 P.M. Mary, It all depends on which version of AOL you were using on your old computer. The later versions store your favorites on the AOL server *unless* you make a deliberate choice to store them on your computer. However, earlier version of AOL automatically kept your favorites on your computer's own memory. So, what version were your using? Judy et al, When I tried this suggestion of highlighting something, anything in the favorites window PRIOR to searching with the find feature, it DID work. That was a real surprise for me! The find feature is supposed to automatically search in the topmost open window, or at least that is what I have understood for several years. In this case, giving the find window a firm focus seems to be needed before it works, but if it works for everyone, that is a big step in the right direction. Thanks Judy for this insight. As stated previously, I click on My Favorites and the Favorite Place window opens with Favorite Places at the top of the window highlighted. I press Control +F key and the Find in Top Window screen appears. I type in what I wish to find and press Find. I just retested my statement by typing PCworld in the Find window since I knew that was one of my favorites. It works fine for me, but maybe because I'm using 8.0. Patricia, It sounds like you are using AOL Search, instead of Control Key+Letter F. Control+F will never give you a list of sites on any subject (like Search does). Control+Letter F(ind) Key just searches what is in an Open Window. For example, go to any Web Page, Hold Down the Control Key (Ctrl) and Click the Letter F on your keyboard-- a tiny search box opens. It has buttons for Search Up or Search Down (i.e. up or down the page). Type in what you hope to Find. If it is on THAT page (Window), your page will "move" down to that item. What version of AOL had you been using previously? The more recent versions store the Favorites on AOL's server by default and they should have just BEEN THERE when you installed and signed onto the new version of AOL. If your old version of AOL was too old to have stored the favorites on AOL then you would need to copy them from your computer and send them to yourself and pick the up on the new computer. Kay- I've had cable to AOL since 1999 and I have to say what you have been experiencing with the freezing isn't the norm. Yesterday, I think AOL was having a problem with a faulty ad that kept trying to load and freezing everything for a long time every time I would go from one email to the next--AOL would say NOT RESPONDING. I hide the ads on the mail window so I don't know which one was a problem but it SEEMS to been fixed (they probably just took off the faulty ad) last night. Fingers crossed anyway. This does not work for me at all. One additional suggestion, to separate longgggg lists of folders... Make a folder and call it BLANK 1 or BLANK 2 (or EMPTY 1) and stick one of those periodically between your "favorites" folders. It helps to have a visual break between other folders you've named. Judy On 8/5/08, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: > I make file folders and put them in there by category. Hello, Does anyone know how to move an AOL address book from AOL version 5.0 from an iMac using OS 8.6 and moving it to a MacBook with OS X or to a Dell windows XP Home Edition using AOL version 9.0 Limited Edition? The address book is rather large. Thanks for any suggestions. Karen **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Read reviews on AOL Autos. the manual method of dragging and dropping is not practical when you have about 200 favorites. I am starting to put like things in folders, but it will take forever. It is really irritating that AOL will not give more attention to this problem when there are so many people struggling over it. It can't be hard to do......or maybe they don't have anyone smart enough to do it on their staff. That must be it, since they keep promising and it never happens.
