    1. Re: [AOL-RW] Saving emails when I leave AOL
    2. Judy Florian
    3. Wow John you made a lot of assumptions in your post. I've been on AOL since 1990? I remember back to 2.5 or some such version. (What a way it's come too.) LOL-- I actually still have my floppy disks they used to install the early versions. But as an experienced AOL user, I find it is FAR more difficult for AOL to handle HUGE pictures like class photos. I'm a webmaster for a county and people send me freshly scanned uncropped photos at high resolutions and full page census images or newspaper images. AOL hangs on download, freezes, crashes, etc. However, "gmail" (Google Mail) has never given me any problem downloading any huge images. Saving mail to one's harddrive by copy-paste is not hard-- but it sure is time consumin if you receive hundreds of mails a day, as I do for the websites and genealogy (not to mention my own family). However, on gmail there is NO "saving" of anything because it saves everything--- every thing-- automatically. I can set up auto filters to sort my mail AS it arrives... and later, I can open one of those folders/labels and read/delete/or close and know it'll still be there 6 mos..a year...from now. Also, saving to one's harddrive does consume space. If you burn to CD, you are incurring an ongoing cost of new RW-CDs and more importantly, CDs *do* fail. Data can become UNreadable. I bought 2 external drives to handle all the stuff I need to save and to back up my website data, and backup the books I write. Of any media, external drives are the most cost effective choice, even over "thumb-USB" drives, and most definitely over CDs. "Cost effective" for Internet access is comprised of many components. Time+ease of use+features that help a user do their work+lack of technical problems and lastly...$$$. I can get "free" AOL --- BUT deal with software issues etc. OR, I can pay an ISP for total Internet access and use AOL Web for free...and not deal with AOL freezing, auto re-opening of the software when I don't want it to re-open...etc. Having broadband is essential for most webmakers, especially if uploading tons of image files-- as I do. A dial-up user until last year, I didn't think I could afford the "expense" of cable modem. BUT, with 6 free genealogy websites AND the hundreds of mails I handle a day AND using Ancestry's databases, AND playing games, these tasks and pasttimes become a nightmare on dial-up. Also, dial-up users must contend with encountering lost data---the dreaded red-X instead of an image---when viewing websites. IF interested in old photos, like class photos, cemetery tombstones, location photos, faster access means being able to see large photos. As a webmaster on broadband now, I must always build in an alternative way for dial-up users to view my content-- but most webmasters do not consider how dial-up users won't see those wonderful large photos of "The user's Hometown" or "Their 3rd grade class" or even a cropped version of a large Census page showing "Their 5th-great-grandfather". For dial-up users I make second sets of images just for dial-up, -- for example, cropping out the faces so dial-up users can at least see that from the larger photo. It comes across rather badly to assume anyone going to broadband "have no concerns for $$$ cost to their budgets". I assert there are more factors than $$$ in chosing the "cost" incurred measured by time, aggravation, frustration, and ease of use. If I had to pay (less than) $35.00 for AOL only, I probably wouldn't bother. But the ease of use with broadband makes that (less than) $35.00 worth it to pay for cable modem access. The only downside, of course, is if the cable company has service problems-- which has only happened once this year. It'd be no different than losing phone service once during a year. And, if you encounter "noise" on your phone line, your service is much less than when on broadband. 3. You just go to www.aol.com and sign in there (instead of opening aol software). Welcome screen may look different (on mine it does). Open your mail screen... look for the same tab for saved mail as you see on aol software. Mail may look different--mine does on 9.1 ver. 1. [AOL-RW] Saving emails when I leave AOL
    2. Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I have tried and it is possible to forward these messages to (for example) my hotmail address. However, I have been saving these emails for many years, and have them all filed in separate folders - there are several hundreds of them. Forwarding them one by one would probably take months - even reading through them all would take more time than I've got. I'd wondered if it was possible to move them in a block - but it seems the answer is no. Someone yesterday mentioned it might be possible to access them on free AOL after I've stopped subscribing to AOL. Is there any way of checking this? I've never heard of free AOL - and I'm very interested. Would appreciate any help on this. And thank you all again - this is a very helpful list. I wish I'd met you all sooner. ------------------------------ Message: 9 Date: Fri, 26 Sep 2008 20:05:27 -0400 From: "Judy Florian" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [AOL-RW] Saving emails when I leave AOL To: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 On 9/26/08, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: <snipped> > 1. Just check to be sure you are getting all your Windows Updates. And, yes, doing a "Disk Cleanup" under "Accessories", helps too. Are you not seeing ANY graphics when you visit webpages AND emails in your AOL email program? On webpages a red x where a graphic should be would indicate either that the image isn't THERE or that the page hasn't loaded fully. Try refreshing the page. 1. Re: [AOL-RW] Saving emails when I leave AOL
    2. In the earlier e-mail (below) I mentioned a shareware product called "ePreserver" that I had used to convert around 8 thousand AOL e-mails to Outlook Express (OE). It cost around $25. One question that would come up immediately is whether or not it can pull e-mails off "my AOL" as well as from "my PC". The answer is "yes". More from About.com about the product: _http://email.about.com/od/aol/gr/epreserver.htm_ (http://email.about.com/od/aol/gr/epreserver.htm) And a place to download: _http://www.software.com/view/9682/75/epreserver-aol-converter/_ (http://www.software.com/view/9682/75/epreserver-aol-converter/) One thing I learned is, if I already have OE going and 4,000 e-mails there, CREATE A NEW OUTLOOK EXPRESS IDENTITY and direct ePreserver to send the converted AOL mail to that new identity. That program dumped all of that old AOL mail in with my existing OE mail and I had a real mess on my hands trying to keep all of my mail sorted out. The new OE identity doesn't have to be actively connected to the net, but rather be just a place to store old AoL mail and open it and read it. Woody ========================== , [email protected] writes: Yes, one can have cable and still connect to AOL. It's even easier, as one can connect instantly with AOL without having to wait for the dial-up. Not only can one connect to AOL faster with cable, one can use AOL and the ISP's mail connection concurrently with no interference, and can jump back and forth with both mail programs running. So one does not have to leave AOL when one goes from dial-up to cable. The question was "When I've read them I press 'Save on AOL'. I want to take these saved messages with me when I leave AOL. There are too many messages to transfer individually to my computer or to print out" Others have stated that one can go ahead and just leave those messages that are ON AOL on AOL and continue to access AOL, but the question was how to how to take the messages when leaving AOL. There is a way. There's a paid way called ePreserver that does a fast conversion of AOL mail to several different e-mail programs. I've used that and it is very effective. And then there is another "no-cost" way that requires a little work, but it saves each e-mail exactly as originally sent to AOL, if using Outlook Express as the new e-mail program. Here's how: 1. Forward each e-mail that one has received in AOLl to your new Outlook Express address. 2. (NOTE: The forwarded e-mails will arrive in Outlook Express list of e-mails with an indicator showing that there is an attachment.) 3. In Outlook Express, open the e-mail from AOL that arrived. The e-mail will be blank, and the attachment block will show there is an attached file with an EML extension. 4. (NOTE: If one clicks on the attachment, the attachment will open and LOOK EXACTLY AS IT DID IN AOL, COMPLETE WITH TO, FROM, SUBJECT, DATE, ETC. 5. (NOTE: The problem here is to get rid of the forward "shell" and preserve the original AOL file exactly as it was in AOL.) 6. To keep the old AOL mail separate from newer mail, create new folders in Outlook Express called "Old AOL INBOX" and "OLD AOL SENT". 7. Open each forwarded AOL mail and drag its .EML attachment to the OLD AOL INBOX or "OLD AOL SENT", as applicable. 8. After dragging each AOL mail file (the EML file) to their respective folder, delete the "forward" e-mail that it arrived in. It's pretty neat being able to open all of one's AOL mail in Outlook Express. And saving in Outlook Express seems to be much more stable than saving in AOL on one's computer. A lot of my saved AOL mail says "no longer available". Seems to be more stable saving on AOL rather than to one's computer. Woody =============================== [email protected] writes: You can still save and see old messages saved ON aol servers when using AOL-FREE through the software. Yes, you can save and see the ONline saved email if you just use the free Web version of AOL (although the box looks different). But if (like me), you eventually want to uninstall AOL and NOT use AOL software OR use AOL web access again, you'll need to copy / send "save to online aol" mails back to yourself. Eventually, I'd like to get away from anything AOL. I laugh... even 2 years ago I couldn't imagine life without AOL. 1. Re: [AOL-RW] Saving emails when I leave AOL
    2. Judy, For AOL mail saved on "My PC", I get the "not available for forwarding" popup --- usually --- but one mail "saved on my PC" dated 2005 forwarded just fine. (?!) Strange. But for all mail saved "on AOL", I never get that "not available for forwarding" (so far). I just now successfully forwarded several mails saved "on AOL" for the years 2005 and 2006 with no problem, just to be sure my recollection wasn't faulty. My experience, insofar as reliable saves of old AOL mail, is that saving "on AOL" is much safer than with saving "on my PC". Numerous incoming e-mails in "my PC" have turned up empty over time. And many of those that I sent that include forwards to others no longer show what was forwarded. Same with attachments. So, again, saving on "my AOL" seems to be much safer, and preserves the e-mail accurately without loss of forwarded content and of attachments.
