Ema, I just did some experimenting. Open Favorites. Highlight something in the favorites section. Then open the Edit tab and do the Find maneuver. That seems to work. When I had not highlighted something then it did not work. Siiiiiiiiiiiigh. Ruth In a message dated 10/3/2008 5:42:28 A.M. Hello List, I am sorry that I have not responded to your mail concerning the problem I had getting connected to AOL, but the truth is, I haven't received any mail from AOLers since before I had my problem. I just assumed that AOLers was down for some reason until I just went to the archives and found my message and your responses. I wonder why I am not receiving mail, I must still be subscribed since my mail goes through. As for my problem with AOL, it was Zone Alarm Firewall v.8 was blocking aol. After disabling it I could connect. I had just downloaded and installed ZA 8 earlier on the same day I had the problem. I finally uninstalled ZA 8 and reinstalled ZA 7. Could someone tell me why I am not receiving AOLers Mail. The only Rootsweb sites I am receiving mail from is RootsMagic and Computers. I have checked my junk mail box and there is not any in there from Aolers. Lloyd -- ____________________________________________________________ Get a life insurance quote online. This is great, Ruth: == What I often do is to open up my Favorites. Then I click on the Edit at the very top left of the AOL screen. Then I click on Find In The Top Window and then type a key word which should be in my favorites list. That often helps a lot. == It works like a charm. I have nearly 1600 Favorites, which are loosely grouped into about 15 categories (naturally, "Miscellaneous" is the largest [gr]). At the head of each group, I insert a folder title (I don't know if it's a real folder or not, I only use that device to insert the dummy title......I've never bothered to learn anything about folders). Normally, I scroll down to the general area when I'm using the less-common Favorites and do a bit of rummaging-around until the one I want appears. It works quite well, but every so often, I have trouble finding the one I want in the "folder" where I think it should be. These will be the cases where the "Find" feature will be a big help. Thanks again.......very much. Pete .................................................... Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts

Hi Jon, If we do it as constructive suggestions, it isn't called bashing. lol I just make lots of folders and when I get an email I send them to the folder and as I have time I do a few of the old ones. I have gobs of them dating back about 9 yrs. so I know where you are coming from. I even make subfolders in several different levels of the favs. Fran CC for the FLGenWeb Project, Inc. a proud part of the USGenWeb Clay Co. < http:/franmuse.com/clay.htm > Lake Co. < http://franmuse.com/lake.htm > Putnam Co. < http://franmuse.com/put.htm > Sumter Co < http://franmuse.com/sumter.htm > Meanderin thru Florida < http://flagenweb.org/default.aspx > ************** Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges? Hi, Fran, Yes, I know we can "drag and drop" to organize FP's, but that method is so archaic and time-consuming. I have roughly 200 FP's because of my genealogy work. I'm trying to add a prefix to each FP such as NOR, CAN, ENG, etc. and then organize the sites. It is a frustrating process, to say the least. I just do not understand why AOL does not give us the option of alphabetizing the list; it is such an easy and inexpensive option to add. I have repeatedly complained to AOL about this and the only reply I ever receive is a "canned" response that tells me nothing. I'd suggest that this issue is an excellent example of how AOL ignores its paying customers while giving us "new and improved" home pages that do nothing but reduce usable content and expand the useless advertising we see. Why else do we see, after "sending" an email, the dialog box with an annoying ad? Yes, I know we aren't supposed to use this list to "bash" AOL, but I do believe this issue is an excellent example of how AOL repeatedly ignores its paying customers and panders to the advertisers. I leave one single site between the files so that I can move another file towards the top- you can also name files you use a lot with a 1 in front of them. If there is an alpha ability on another list like on your puter files, this will throw that file automatically to the top group. I tend to do my filing in favs with the ones I use most at the top instead of strictly alpha. Fran ************** Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges? It is a longgg process of (1) setting up folders and (2) moving favs into folders. Now, here's the bad part... AOL can't make a folder in favorites if you are sitting ON a folder. (if ON a folder, it'll make a new folder INSIDE that folder). You CAN make a folder in the midst of a bunch of hearts, though. To give me "space" between folders, I created some folders and named each one *****BLANK 1***** *****BLANK 2***** etc. Now, you can try to make "groups" of similar folders, and after the last folder of a group, drag the "blank" folder to be the last of that group. Example of folders: Genealogy_Pees Family Genealogy_Waller Family etc etc etc etc *****BLANK 1***** Tips_research Tips_Health Tips_Computers *****BLANK 2***** Family_mine Family_hubby (blank one) etc When I organized, I found it easiest to start at the BOTTOM. It gives you MORE room to make folders. LEAVE a couple extra hearts between folders when you start-- it makes it easier to create a new folder when you find a fav you forgot about. LEAVE some hearts OUT of folders at the top too, in case you need another new folder at the top-- you can move those individual favs last. When you want to re-arrange or alphabetize your folders, remember the FIRST FOLDER or heart you drag & drop will fall to the BOTTOM of the list--- So do drag-drop in reverse order so that the one you want at the TOP of the list is the LAST one you drop into the top. If you use "Blank" folders in between other folders, don't forget to move each blank one in the order you want, as you move the real folders. Just to clarify, dropping from the top means letting go over the word "Favorites" at the very top of the list. Works better for me with the end of a paper clip, because it's a flatter surface than a pin. But, hey, whichever works :-) Judy On 10/1/08, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: > > Some modems and routers also have a "reset mechanism" - my Netgear router > has a hole in the back that resets it if you stick a pin in it, thereby > restoring its factory settings.
Dave, This is a real sore spot with me. I've been asking AOL for years to give us the option of alphabetizing Favorite Places and AOL has still not given us this option. It would be a very minor and extremely easy programming change, but AOL does not seem to care. There are ways you can manually organize FP, but it is laborious and tedious, especially if one has dozens of FP's, as I do. I'm guessing in this case since the poster has dial-up that we're talking about an internal built-in modem--but they are still hardware and can be faulty. Yeah--I think so too--UNLESS the connectivity problem is with the MODEM itself. The error message related to connectivity--so there could be an issue with the phone line or the modem and not the AOL software. I have to admit though that the error message and problems with the software itself sound as if the issues are with the software and not the hardware or phone line. But if a reinstall doesn't fix it--then I'd check out the phone line (plug a phone into it and see if you can make a call) and also check the modem. Joan In a message dated 10/1/2008 2:29:55 P.M.
