    2. Jon- Sorry but that is NOT the purpose of this list. This list is for DISCUSSION of issues related to using AOL and AOL with RootsWeb...not to complain about AOL's practices. 1. [AOL-RW] AOL access to Internet
    2. In discussion of AOL fees, My computer Thesaurs describes the word FREE as: Done by one's own choice: Voluntary, gratuitous, complementary, gratis, cost-free. In my dictionary the word FEE is described: A fixed sum charged for a privilege; A charge for Professional services.; Dial up seems to fall under the FEE, no matter what the motivation. JOHN in CA

    1. [AOL-RW] AOL Dial Up Plan
    2. It appears some of you have different reasons to sign up for the Dial up AOL that do not apply to all AOL users. In my case I do use the AOL Dial Up plan on my home desktop and my Laptop. On trips I have never had a problem as I use their setup option to find the local ISP telephone numbers that AOL displays in your software. Then all I have ever needed was an electrical plug if the Laptop battery was on the blink, to get Laptop power. Those who prefer Broadband AOL versions, have made the choice themselves to spend large $$$ for DSL, BROADBAND access to the Internet. Thousands of SENIORS do not have such outlay of monthly fees for their entertainment and choose the lowest cost to get access to the Internet and their email without huge monthly Cable TV fees and such. We cannot paint the AOL Dial Up fee as anything more than an "unreasonable fee" to force AOL users to pay large monthly fees to Phone Companies, Cable Providers to get FREE access to AOL. A Business can list their expenses on their income Tax returns, the others can only spend, spend for Internet Access to some major provider. Others get FREE access at their homes and on Laptops by using authorization from Schools, Universities, and government access where they work or have family working. Yes, It would be wonderful for the USA to follow the decisions of FINLAND, but at what cost, and under which political system? AOL Dial Up is not a hindrance to use, at home or on the road, for me. Most hotels do have an access to an outside line that allows me to find the local area ISP telephone number to read the email, without any long distance charges. JOHN in CA

    1. Re: [AOL-RW] replying to a digest message
    2. Could we please follow the below rules on replies? My computer is filling up with messages repeated over and over and over and over. Just highlight a couple lines from the message you are replying to and then type in your reply. Thanks Patricia In a message dated 10/23/2009 12:00:28 A.M. 1. Re: [AOL-RW] Woody - AOL plans
    2. Yes, on the laptop I have AOL 9.0 SE along with AVG. I do not use McAfee. AVG gives me a nag screen every time I boot, but that's fine with me with it being free. I've paid for and used Norton "forever" on my desktop. Earlier versions of Norton were prone to get corrupted and asked me questions like I was supposed to know what I was doing. But versions 2008 and 2009 have been very reliable and non-intrusive, and are not the memory hogs they were before. I've been free of virii and malware with Norton (Symantec) Internet Security. However, if I had known about free AVG and Zone Alarm before, I probably would have gone with them. On the other hand, Norton Internet Security is completely worry free and hassle free, and I like that. Woody ================== Nlpakkala@aol.com writes: Woody, I noticed you said that you used free AVG on your laptop. Do you use AOL on that computer too? I tried using AVG and the computer was so slow I couldn't do anything and then Joan or Sharon said you can't have two virus programs, they conflict. We are most likely going to the free version very soon but just want to be sure I understand all the quirks before I do it. I was planning on buying a McAfee program but I see you mentioned Norton, was that a free download or did you have to buy it from somewhere. Thanks for your input. Nancy

    1. Re: [AOL-RW] $9.99 plan
    2. Ah yes!! Now I remember, THAT's what you don't get by paying AOL $9.99/mo. When you're on a road trip at a motel/hotel and they don't have wireless and you want to dial up to AOL and check your e-mail, you can't do it, even using their 800 numbers with the per minute fee. I thought that, surely, with free AOL, one could still use their 800 number to dial up, but I tried two successive locations and the fee based 800 number wouldn't work. Woody ============================= _Utahn1@aol.com_ (mailto:Utahn1@aol.com) writes: The $9.99 plan allows me a certain number of hours of dial-up included in the price when I hit a hotel which does not offer free or reasonably priced wireless. Or, if cable/router goes out here at home then I can still use dial-up. Plus, I still don't know about the online AOL mail storage with the free version. If I ever get all my mails organized, deleted, printed etc. and off AOL, I might then switch to the free program. More and more hotels are offering wireless which is reasonably priced. Ruth ============================= _JYoung6180@aol.com_ (mailto:JYoung6180@aol.com) writes: Then what would be the advantage of the $9.99 plan over the free plan if they only offer limited tech support? 2. I guess the advantage of the 9.99 plan over the free plan would be the McAfee security suite for free. Nancy

    1. Re: [AOL-RW] $9.99 plan
    2. Walter, You are absolutely correct. Thanks for the information. I've never hit their allotted number of hours so it has never been a problem for me thus far. If I am ever in a situation where that changes, then I will switch. Again, thank you. Ruth Cherecwich In a message dated 10/22/2009 10:51:43 A.M.
