Vanette- When I'm running Firefox (which is most of the time) along with AOL and mIRC and often other programs I have no trouble. Firefox doesn't seem to add much to the mix as far as memory (system resources). The resources meter doesn't go up much when I load and use Firefox. As for physical space the program takes up on your computer I'd bet it is far less than IE. If I were you I'd go to Mozilla's Web site and download Firefox -- I doubt if your computer would allow you to download it if there wasn't space to house it. My only warning there would be, once installed, Firefox may tell you that in order to get the full benefit from some Web sites you visit that you need specific plug-ins (such as Adobe Flash) but, again, none of these plug-ins are very huge and you will probably be just fine. Mozilla Firefox is the preferred browser these days of about 50% of Internet users because it is much faster and slicker than IE. It doesn't seem to put as much stress on my computer either. You can download it and auto-install it free at the Mozilla Web site. I believe the latest version is 7.0.14 but there is also a 7.5 version that may be out of beta now. Firefox is more secure (and easier to use once you get the hang of it) than IE. Many people feel it is also a safer browser because IE has many exploits that permit malicious code to get to your computer--so many think Firefox is safer to use. Remember, all a browser is is a tool that enables us to read Web pages. Each browser goes about performing that task slightly differently but the end result is pretty much the same. Joan PS: I'm also hearing good things about the new Google Chrome browser but I haven't tried it myself. In a message dated 10/24/2009 11:33:15 A.M. Thanks Woody, If you can think of anything else I should get let me know Ill get zone alarm now Ema Ema, You need one good AV and one good firewall on your computer. AVG for AV and Zone Alarm would satisfy those. Malwarebytes is a good one to run. Works with other anti-mailware. See http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php Woody
Exactly! Facebook and the apps are too intense for the AOL browser and sometimes bring the whole AOL program crashing down. But for a lot of other pages the AOL browser or stand-alone IE work fine. Have you performed the usual "Disk Cleanup"? If so, you might try running CCleaner. That cleaned out 343 bad entries in my son's registry, and speeded up the computer considerabley. Annie is saying better what I was trying to get across. If you have a gripe with AOL we can't help you here--go to AOL and complain. If you have something ABOUT using AOL or AOL and RootsWeb that you think your fellow list members can answer--then this is the right place to post. Thanks! Of course there is a fee for dial-up. Have you looked at the basic charges on your phone bill lately? AOL pays those same charges multiplied by thousands of telephone lines. There HAS to be a fee so they can pay the telephone bill. It's a DUH!! Ruth In a message dated 10/23/2009 10:55:17 A.M.
