    1. [AOLers]gmail help
    2. I have already put a big red "S" on my forehead, so please help. I need to send an email to a site that will not accept aol mail. I have a google account and gmail (I thought).   So how to I get to the gmail account to send an email? Gmail has my aol  account listed as an alternative email. I try to sign in to gmail but can't seem to do that.  I am told that name is already used. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Judy

    3. That is what I meant by having changed the list settings to munge the from headers. That is what allows AOL users to get the list mail. Joan Young jyoung6180@aol.com Now what?! AOL ran the whole e-mail together. Then I could find nowhere Terri's e-mail address. Terri's address was shown to be aolers-rootsweb. That's all. Then when I did a "reply", her e-mail address was in the "TO" block. Well, thank goodness for that. But it's frustrating when the sender's address shows up only in a reply "TO" block. I am double subscribed to another list, with one being an AOL address and the other is a Gmail address. AOL runs all of the e-mails together, making a mess. The Gmail version retains all formatting and stays neat. AOL has been problematic with Rootsweb for 20 years. I would like to keep using AOL with Rootweb, but AOL rejects distributions from Rootsweb sent to all AOLers, with exceptions to this AOLer list, but not always. Woody

    3. Oddly, this did not get distributed, even though in the archives. So this is a "resend". Woody -----Original Message----- From: Marvin \Woody\ Woodworth <boguswoody@aol.com> To: aolers-rootsweb <aolers-rootsweb@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tue, Dec 12, 2017 9:22 pm Subject: Re: [AOLers] AOL not delivering posts back to me Note that my reply was sent only to the AOLer list, with no copy to anyone else, and you and thus apparently all other AOLers received the post without a "reply-all". The "reply all" just sets up a CC which goes back directly to the poster, bypassing the AOLer list. If Mailman prevents a distributed copy from going to the poster, then the poster doesn't know if their post was distributed, and even if in the archives, an AOler cannot be certain if it went to other AOLers. So, if I only sent my AOL post ONLY to AOLers-Rootsweb and I received a distributed copy then I know for certain the AOLer list is working normally like the good old days. I'm not the listowner of the Woodworth list, nor any list. The listowner uses AOL, and is hindered greatly by the confusing problem. I'm sort of an unofficial deputy listowner that can do emergency subs and unsubs, sort of because I have a Woodworth web site that is sort of semi-affiliated. I don't even understand the suggestion you made for listowners. Whatever is known to work I'd like to see applied to all listowners without exception. Woody -----Original Message----- From: Joan Young <jyoung6180@aol.com> To: boguswoody <boguswoody@aol.com>; aolers-rootsweb-l <aolers-rootsweb-l@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tue, Dec 12, 2017 8:54 pm Subject: Re: [AOLers] AOL not delivering posts back to me I changed another list setting also...in addition to the REPLY TO settings. perhaps that was what did the trick. I am not sure but in any case the setting is controlled by the list admin so it isn't something RootsWeb could do for all lists. Here is what I changed if you want to suggest it to any other admins for their lists: "Replace the From: header address with the list's posting address to mitigate issues stemming from the original From: domain's DMARC or similar policies." So it might be AOL's DMARC policy that causes the trouble. The setting I chose says to: "Munge From" address. "Reply all" seems to make no difference, as I sent the post only to the list. However, I just posted a message to the Woodworth list and I did not receive my distribution from the list. I am triple subscribed to that list -- another AOL address and a Gmail address. The post did get in the Woodworth archives. The post was not received by my other AOL address. It was received by my GMail address. Another person (not an AOLer) responded immediately to my AOL post, and included my post, thus ensuring the post was received by all including non-AOLers, although indirectly through a non-AOL ISP. I have posted more on the NEWBIE-LISTOWNER list but no AOLer received it. Not me nor any AOLer. However, a non-AOLer person in the UK responded, saying she did receive my post. I even did the "reply all' with my own "sent" file, and that didn't work except to send myself a copy direct to me. So those AOLers who send a post to THIS list have their posts behave normally like the good old days. This AOLer list seems to be an exception to all other Rootsweb lists. It works. According to Terry of the NL list, hers works like the Woodworth list. That is, AOL posts do not get distributed to the poster nor to any other AOLer. Their posts on the lists they own, however, do go in the archives. On the NL list, there is no archive to see if Rootsweb received and acted on the NL post. As an AOLer, the only way I saw the two other AOlers (Joan and Terry) on the NL list was that their posts were included in the posts of other non-AOLers on that list. Therefore, whatever Rootsweb did to make the AOLers list behave like the good old days where AOL posts went everywhere like the posts of other ISPs, Rootsweb should do the same to all other lists for AOL to work. If Rootsweb can make all lists work for AOL the same as all other ISPs, then I won't have to tell people they should drop AOL and use another ISP. It's vital that the changes be made for all of those listowners who use AOL. Like Terry who is trying to use the NL list to help her out, she cannot communicate with any AOLers on her list, nor does she receive her distributions. If someone else on the NL list had not included her post on their post, no other AOLer on the NL list would have seen her post. Seeing hers and Joan's post on the posts of non-AOLers was the only way I happened to see their posts. It's very frustrating. So, whatever Rootsweb did the the AOLer list to make it work normally for AOLers, can they do the same for all lists? This evening I was trying to post something to a Rootsweb mail list (Woodworth) from AOL. No distribution came back to my AOL IN box. Nothing went to SPAM. It was put in the Rootsweb archives (Woodworth), however. I had a Gmail alternate address for the same list for troubleshooting. The e-mail went straight the SPAM folder, with an advisory that it doesn't like the extra places or names it goes through that makes it appear to be a possible spoof. I sent the same message much shorter, as the first try was long. Same thing. Doesn't show up on AOL. Gmail says it is spam. I saw then that I needed to send the e-mail from another non-AOL address, so I used my Gmail subscription name, and it went through to both Gmail and AOL. So, I can see that AOLers are going to have a rough time posting on Rootsweb in the future and understanding what areas are going wrong. Any advice?
