He married Elizabeth M S Ferguson in 1852 at Blairgowrie. There is said to have been 5 children 3 boys(1 Dead) and 2 girls. The boys, Alexander and George were entered into the Dundee Poorhouse, after their mother died in 1856, in March of 1857 and removed 6 months later. They appear in the 1861 census as boarders with the Andersons of Crathie and Braemar. John's occupation is listed as Fireman/Ship Stoker.
