Are both the father and the witness(es) named in the record? I notice you say "witnesses" in the plural - more than one by the same name? Absent something unusual, the witness would not have been the father. Or put more accurately, the father would not also have been a witness [the witness /could/ have been the father but we won't go there . . .] Could there have been a grandfather/great-grandfather also with the name? Perhaps they were the witnesses.
