Two possible reasons I can think of, Sandy: Granny lived in South Muir and acted as midwife; Health reasons. One of my father's cousins was born in South Muir (1909) because her mother was suffering from tuberculosis and was taken to the fresh hill air above Kirriemuir away from the damp atmosphere of Forfar with its factory chimneys.
