I would recommend a survey of where in Scotland the Profitt (various spellings) surname is found around 1700, and use that as a basis for surmise as to his place of birth. Sources such as the Register of the Pry Council of Scotland; Register of the Great Seal of Scotland, etc. A look at Black's "Surnames of Scotland" would suggest that the counties of Aberdeen down to Angus might be a fruitful area.
