This is the page Ray is referring to. http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/ I have pasted in this page to this email though I am not too sure whether it will come through in a form that is understandable. Search catalogue records This screen allows you to search using keyword, reference and date fields. Persons (name authority) records can be searched using search terms and dates. Place records can be searched using search terms only. If you wish to carry out a more complex search, please use the Advanced search or Build your own search options Search Reset search fields Catalogue Persons Places Search for: Phrase All words (AND) Any word (OR) Use "phrase" to look for exact matches to a group of words, for example John Smith would find only records containing this name; Use "all words" to look for records which contain all of the specified words in any order, for example a search for John Smith would also find a record containing "the smith in the village was called John Brown"; use "any word" to find all records which contain any of the specified words - in this case all records containing "John" and all records containing "Smith". Reference: Matches Starts Contains Use "Matches" to find this exact reference number; use "Starts" to find all references which start with this reference, for example CH2 would find "CH2", "CH2/1" and "CH20"; Use "Contains" to search where this is only part of the reference eg "C2" would find "C2", "C2/1" and "BBC2". Dates from: Dates to: Include undated records Enter dates in one or both fields to specify a range of dates to search for. Dates should be entered in the format "12 Oct 1900", "Oct 1900" or "1900". If partial dates are given, the system will search for the widest range of matching dates, for example "1900" in both fields will return 1 Jan 1900 to 31 Dec 1900.
