Hi all Further to my last post on the COOK - STEEL saga Still seeking my g.g.grandmother Jean/Jane COOK b1802 Dundee, parents David COOK & Jane STEEL The baptism for a David COOK in 1800 Aberdeen with parents David COOK and Jane STEEL looked promising as a possible sibling to Jean but having obtained it I am not convinced It reads :- 1800 December Third David COOK Sergeant in the Fifth Regiment of the North British Militia and Jean STEEL his wife had a son born named David; Baptised by the Rev'd. Dr. George GORDON in presence of Serg't. KIRK and David LAWSON of the foresaid Regiment lying in the Barracks here Using a search for any COOKs baptised or born in Aberdeen I find only 50 between 1700 & 1854 and none show any connection to a David COOK and Jane or Jean of any sort never mind STEEL except the one above One question that someone may be able to answer, there are two entries for a David COOK, one very close to the baptism I mention above, they show in the index as follows :- 6 07/12/1800 COOK DAVID DAVID COOK/FRMRV27-P59 U Aberdeen ABERDEEN CITY/ABERDEEN 168/A00 0100 No Image 7 03/12/1800 COOK DAVID DAVID COOK/JEAN STEEL M Aberdeen ABERDEEN CITY/ABERDEEN 168/A00 0100 0085 No 6 shows with no image or mother, anyone know if theres anything to be gleaned from the code FRMRV27-P59 ? Using a search of COOKs baptised or born in Dundee I find less than 50 between 1750 and 1854 but no obvious connected COOKs or STEELs A baptism for a Jane STEEL (wrong parents but I was prepared to look at it) does not appear within the OPRs , it was a Patron submission though So still none the wiser Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > Dear all > > New to this list but not rootsweb or research :-) > > I confess I have long overlooked my g.g.grandmothers roots and would very > much like to make some inroads into her origins > > My g.g.grandmother was Jean COOK b1802 Dundee according to the census of > 1851, 61 & 71
Nivard, the fact that this David Cook was in the army, and living in barracks, indicates that he was probably not from Aberdeen, but merely stationed there, so he could still well be from Dundee. Hi Doreen Thanks for yours My problem at the moment is that I have nothing to link the David COOK in Aberdeen to my g.g.grandmother, there is no knowledge or history of any military connection, but there again there is no history *period* :-( It seems a huge leap of faith from an 1800 baptism in Aberdeen to my g.g.grandmothers reputed birthplace of Dundee in 1802, the only connecting factor is the names of David COOK and Jane STEEL There is also the chance that Dundee was the next place he was stationed The only thing going for the connection is that to my surprise David COOK appears to be not to common a name, I would have thought there would be thousands but not so it seems I will see if I can find anything on this Militia that the David belonged to, at least a sergeant has more chance of being found than your average squaddie Nothing surprises me anymore in genealogy so will see what I can find Appreciate your input Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) Nivard, the fact that this David Cook was in the army, and living in barracks, indicates that he was probably not from Aberdeen, but merely stationed there, so he could still well be from Dundee.
