Hello folks: John Nicoll (Ensign) was born in Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland about 1759. (The year was figured from his Army Records-he recieved his Ensign Commission-22 Jan 1807, where he gave his age as 48 years old.) . He went to Guernsey and joined the 5th Royal Veteran's Battalion stationed there. He met and married Mary Knight @ St. Martin's Parish, St. Peter's Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands, the 10th of May 1783. John's Army record shows that 4 children were born in Guernsey: Alexander-25 May 1795; James-7 Nov 1798; Peter-5 Nov 1800; Mary-29 Nov 1803. The 1st child, John, born about 1788, and the last, Harriet Headley, born about 1805, were not listed. >From Guernsey, John & family came to Quebec (having to over-winter in Nova Scotia), c 1808-10 (his wife Mary supposedly died in Quebec in 1810). He remained at the garrison in Quebec until his regiment was disbanded in 1821. He was given a land grant for his service in Canada and settled in Perth, Ontario, where he re-married Dorothy McPhail in 1820. I am attempting to find out who John's parents were - I have been given information that his father was also John and his father was James however, I have no definitive proof. Can someone steer me in the right direction? Many thanks Sandi Bellefeuille, Mississauga, Ontario Canada
