Subject: Re: [ANGUS] Dundee mariners > Can you tell me what years this covered please > Thanks > Berry Berry "Mariners of Dundee - Their City - Their River - Their Fraternity" by Hamish Robertson The Fraternity is a very old one. My friend Hamish once told me :: QUOTE First mention of a Seamen's Fraternity was in 1554 when the Burgesses of the town of Dundee requested Dundee Ship Masters and Seamen to form an organisation to levy dues, or taxes, on arriving and departing ships. In due course the Fraternity became responsible for pilotage on River Tay and installing buoys and lighthouses for the safety of ships and seamen. In this role the Fraternity built lighthouses at Buddonness and Tayport. Although the role of the Fraternity has declined since the 1840s, there remains a resolute membership of 70 mariners dedicated to maintaining the original concepts and responsibilities. END Entries in his book span those years - not a complete record, of course, Many time just a listing of those attending a meeting, being accepting into the Fraternity and etc. He published his book in 2006 Regards Barbara Neish Bermuda
