I would be very interested if Alexander CAITHNESS or his son James Robertson CAITHNESS are mentioned in this book. I know a number of the vessels that they sailed on - CHOICE, DAISY, SHIFT, WILLIAM. For Pat & Liz There are several mentions of CAITHNESS and the vessels. Perhaps these entries are of interest ? thanks Barbara, the George Caithness info much appreciated... my "THOMAS NICOLL" was a "blockmaker' in Dundee [1785-1841]; I am not sure if that was making "block and tackle" or in the print industry. .the naming after a shipmaster could imply in shipping industry but his son's son was a bookbinder and another son was another blockmaker...a mystery. another NICOLL person, George Robertson Nicoll [b. Dundee 1824] was apparently in shipping in Australia? and was a shipbuilder...am wondering if HE might appear in the book also? and JAMES ROBERTSON NICOLL[b. Dundee 1817] "had interests in Peterhead Whaling Fleet" according to elderly family members. If you can bear another lookup, I'd appreciate it. thanks Liz of BC Canada

Hi Barbara, The book sounds really interesting, especially as I seem to have countless mariners in my own ancestry! I wonder, are there any TOSHes mentioned in the book? My TOSHes all seem to have been Dundee mariners, right up to James TOSH (1817-1878). Any info on the TOSHes would be eagerly and gratefully received! ;-) Best wishes, Sue

Quoting Barbara Neish <neishnook@ibl.bm>: > > "Mariners of Dundee - Their City - Their River - Their Fraternity" > by Hamish Robertson Barbara, Would there be mention of Dick Johnston's ships, and Patrick Barry's ships during 1850- 1875 for Dick Johnston, a shorter period for Patrick? Thanks, Barbara Melb Aust.
