> "Mariners of Dundee - Their City - Their River - > Their Fraternity" > by Hamish Robertson > i am reading a letter from a Canadian NICOLL descendent written to me about 1980; this gentleman is now deceased. He went on to tell a story about GEORGE ROBERTSON NICOLL [born Dundee 1824] and how sailing from Dundee to America then on to Australia but being shipwrecked in Figi and "his shipmates being eaten by cannabals" . I was about to discount all this but discovered by Googling <George Robertson Nicoll> , that he wrote up his 50 years of travels in 1899, and the manuscript is in the Australian Archives!. a summary was written up in NLA News, July 2003 called "For the Love of Travel: China through the eyes of a nineteenth century Scot". I understand that GEORGE ROBERTSON NICOLL returned to England {isle of Wight] : he was there in 1901 census and he apparently died there. OK a trip to Australia is needed here. Liz of BC Canada
