There are two distinct surnames, Haggie and Heggie (SEE Black's "Surnames of Scotland"); and the question of spelling is a perception of modern practice. In the past, spelling was written according to how a name sounded, and so you could get a number of different spellings for the same surname at the same time, sometimes within the same document!
