The sister's names are a little different (Jane vs Jean) etc but so much else is in accord with what I know. I think this is my g-father. He was an orphan which would explain being an inmate and 3 years later would take a position as a ship's carpenter and depart Scotland forever. He achieved great things as a builder of public buildings in WA and, in WW1, was recalled to Britain where he supervised airframe manufacture at the Handley Page factory at Cricklewood, north-west London.
