    1. [ANGUS] Further to Willonyards ... maps

    3. I look forward to seeing the map that Alan has used to locate Willonyards but in the meantime I had a look for myself at maps about the mid 1700s on www.nls.uk . The following might be useful: William Roy, Military Survey of Scotland 1747-55. I found Woodenyards and New Muir on this just to the South of Forfar ... must go out that way when the rain stops and see if any trace can be found! This is a wonderful map of the whole of Scotland but I would advise anyone using it to have a very good map modern of the area being studied as there are no present day roads, no railways of course, and even a few lochs have disappeared. I had no trouble navigating around Angus which I know very well. I had to give up on trying to find a place in Dumfries and Galloway, and area that I last visited over 12 years ago. I will have to study an Ordnance Survey map to get my bearings before I try again. John Thomson's Atlas of Scotland 1832. Navigation again requires some local knowledge. Compared to Roy's map the local place names have changed in 80 years or so but many are still recognisable. Cheers, Bruce D
