Hi Colin, I don't know too much about the family, but I will tell what i do know. Number 28 hill street was what was known as Slum clclearance homes. what that means is that the people who lived there in the thirties came from homes throughout the city that had been condemed as unfit for humans to live in ( there were many of these homes). If you go to the City of Dundee archives and check out the pictures of old Dundee you will see a picture of one of the houses that were condemed in Forebank. (very seldom refered to as Forebank rd. or street. just simply Forebank) The one picture I have refered to shows an elderly woman sitting by the fire place in the condemend house. If you are squeemish, don't look. However if you have any old pictures of your wife's family it is possible that the old lady might show a resemblance. as I said there were 21 children in the family the youngest were younger than me but the oldest were much older than me. Going by what I remember the youngest would be about 70 years old now and the oldest would be about mid 90s. I do not know how this poor woman managed as the house only had two bed rooms, a kitchen and living room. You can imagine what life was like with 23 people in this little space. I dont see where it was possible for the person taking the census to get the Ann street and Forebank addresses mixed up. I know that area very well and i can tell you the distance between Ann Street and 2 forebank was about 5 hundred yards with a church and school along with five tenements between them. Just before ww11 37 Ann street was condemend and boarded up. When the war finished and the men returned from the war there were no houses available so they became Squaters an took over the condemend homes. These homes had no water, light, heat or sanitation. my sister and her husband squated in 37 Ann street for several years until they got a council house in the newly created housing schemes. I hope this helps you with your search. If you think that I might be able to help you further. please do not hesitate to let me know. Happy hunting. Dave perks Hamilton, Ontario. Hi David This fits what I have. Emily & Joseph Cree moved from Dallfield Walk to 28 Hill Street in 1936. She stayed there forseveral years, remarrying Robert Kennedy after Joseph died. She was there up to 1945, and would have had between 10 and 13 children that we know of, including Stewart Kiddie from before she was married. Stewart died in 2004, but would have been about 86 this year. My father-in-law does not remember any other children, but it is posible that other cousins etc stayed there? Some of her children were still recorded at that address as late as 1947. (The were serving in the Forces at the time). Did you also live in Hill Street? Regarding the Census records, at the top of page 24, the address entered is 37 Ann Street. On the next line the enumerator has entered "9 Powrie Place or 2 Forebank Road". The Cree Family (Joseph's Grandparents) are entered at the bottom of page 24 and top of page 25. Looking at Nivard's reply to my original message, page 27 still had the same "Address". I suspect that the correct address is 9 Powrie Place as it is off Ann Street, near no. 37.
