This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: RossThomas77 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/5599.1.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Thanks to all who have contributed to the understanding of my grandfather's past. From the two census data, it appears (to me) that his elder sister Jane took her younger siblings under her family roof at Dundee initially and that James later lived at Dale School in Arbroath (the Institution?). It is likely that he qualified here as a carpenter/joiner as he was soon after known as a master craftsman in Australia - by 1915 he was recalled to Britain to supervise airframe manufacture at the Handley Page plant. If anyone can help on the history of Dale School, I would be very appreciative. Also, any record of his parents eg in earlier census or BMD data? Best wishes, Ross - proudly of solid Scots, Manx, Cornish and Irish stock (alright, a little English as well!) PS In 1985 I visited Arbroath and found the street where James was born - Millgateloan (correct spelling?). The 'smokies' were superb. Ross, Why not purchase 5GBPounds of units from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, which gives 30 units to use. It takes 1 unit to view a list of persons born in an area in a time frame, the, 5 units to view a person's b.d.m., you are able to print a copy of the certificate. These date from 1855, so possibly youd find James birth, census from 1861, parents marriage & death, & whether there are siblings. Re: his parents could be on www.freecen.org.uk, The pound equates to about $2.40 Aus, is worth every bit for records available. Regards Barbara, Melb. Aust. apologies if earlier email was sent.
