Ian, I have a similar story in my own family. My gg grandmother, Anne Miller, was born in 1842. Her mother was Margaret Miller. Anne then had an illegitimate daughter, Betsy. In 1871, Anne was now married, and living in Dundee. Her daughter Betsy was in Leven, with her grandmother, Margaret Miller, and g gran, Betsy Miller. Betsy died in 1875 (in Leven). The family were all originally from Angus though. There was no indication that Margaret was around when her mother died. I can find no trace of Margaret after 1871. Her daughter's death certificate states that her mother was Margaret Miller, later married to David Smith, farmer. Like you, I can find no record of a marriage for Margaret, or a death. Did the family make this story up to make her seem more respectable? Did she get married outside Scotland? I doubt if I will ever get to the bottom of this one.
