Alexander is quite a common name and Smith is a very common surname so it would be easier to research the Ford side. I have seen in Forfar (Angus) cemetry quite a few Ford and Pullar headstones so Angus is a good place to start. Agnes was apparently born in 1831 so she should appear in the 1841 census and, if she was not already married (probably unlikely) by then, in the 1851 census of Scotland. This is available on Scotlands People, a reasonably priced "pay to view" website linked to the National Archives of Scotland. Laing73 has already indicated a probable census entry in 1861 so the next step would be to see if they were still in Scotland (maybe not in the same place) in 1871. This would probably establish if they left before that date. You have a window for their removal to Canada between 1870 and 1873. If you look at the website for the National Library of Canada you will find access to shipping list of this period. They are NOT indexed so you are in for a tedious search reading through each one! I did this assuming the following parameters: dates, between 1871 and 1875; port of departure, Glasgow; port of arrival, Quebec. I read several lists every morning for a period of days and discovered my missing family somewhere about list 42! What happens in Canada is anybody's guess. By that time compulsory BMD registration was in force but I have come across relatives who were not registered until the 1940s. If you get this far post again to find out how records after the 1870s can be found in Canada and USA. Cheers Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
