Hi Listers, I can't seem to find a good definition of the "lesser excommunication". Sounds like his own minister wouldn't pronounce it on Henry Balfour. Obviously he wasn't obedient as he was charged with "Contumacy". I wonder if I'll get any more information on this case in future pages. Andrew Edgar in his "Old Church Life in Scotland" (1885): "The sentence of lesser excommunication meant suspension from the Lord's table ..." ie exclusion from taking Communion. By comparison, the greater excommunication, while it also involved exclusion from the Scarament, could involve serious civil penalties, such as being declared a rebel or having one's goods poinded.
