I have recently been given the information about my
My 6 x g grandfather, Angus PETRIE died or was buried between 1736 and 1766 on Yell in the Shetland Islands. As he was a married man with children living in Panbride ANGUS, I wondered what on earth he was doing up there..... There are no longer burial records for that period in Yell, Shetland so time for a bit of lateral thinking. Was there a whaling industry out of Dundee at that time and did they hunt in the Shetland Islands waters? Gen in NBL England

Yes, and yes. Dundee was a big whaling centre, and to get to and from the whaling seas you had to go past Shetland, so you would probably put in there for fresh water and supplies. Anne
