The following entry from the Angus (Forfarshire) archives looks very likely therefore, that Robert was the Deacon of a trade guild, rather than an ecclesiastical deacon: "Petition of Robert Mill, (present Deacon) and James Neave (present Boxmaster) to the tailor trade of Forfar for themselves and as representing the said incorporation. 13th January 1792. The former Deacon, Robert Smith and the former Boxmaster, Alexander Rattray, had failed to hand over the Guild's Charter".
