**Irene is quite correct. The online indexes are only to Church of Scotland registers, not all of which are complete, and also not included are the registers of the Episcopal Church of Scotland, the Seccession Church, and other non-C. of S. denominations, including the at that time rare Roman Catholic church. Also some families either refused to have the child's baptism recorded, or the Session Clerk forgot to write it up in the register, or the family did not have the child baptised. All of which shows that the non-appearance of a name in the indexes does NOT mean that the only solutions are those in the indexes. Look for other evidence: from gravestones, trade records , wills and testaments, old family bibles, for example. Criminal records on the NAS online catalogue can be quite informative... Gordon.
