If you go to deceasedonline you will find 8 James or J Colville burials in various cemeteries in Angus Regards Alex.
Hi Jim, Can you provide more information on James? Knowing approximately when he died and where he was living at the time would help decide where to start looking. If he died after about 1850 and was buried in a municpal cemetery it should be possible to find the burial record. If he died in Angus the record should be available on www.deceasedonline.com . Note that this does not include Dundee or some of the parished surrounding Dundee which come under the governance of Dundee Council. Lastly, did you know that there's a website called Find a Grave? Lesley Robertson

Hi Alastair, I've not researched Patrick Bell, but I can add a little titbit. My husband comes from the Soutars of Carmyllie, and there is one relative called Patrick Bell Soutar, born in 1867, presumably when Patrick Bell was still the Minister. Hi Alastair, Yes, I've done quite a bit of info on Rev Patrick BELL. He was born 19 Apr 1799, Auchterhouse, Angus, son of George BELL and his wife Margaret LUNAN, who were married on 20 Jul 1793. (My own interest is really in the LUNANs - Patrick BELL's mother, Margaret LUNAN, was a sister of my 5G Grandmother, Christian LUNAN). Patrick BELL was one of eleven children. He married Jean/Jane LAWSON on 5 Oct 1859, Dundee, Angus, and they had three children. As well as being the Minister of Carmyllie, Angus, Patrick was also an inventor, and by 1828 had come up with the first automatic reaping machine, the Bell's Reaper. Eventually, it helped to change the face of farming, and 40 years on, Patrick was presented with the handsome sum of £1,000 and a silver salver by the Scottish Highland and Agricultural Society. Patrick BELL died in 1869. Hope this helps! His age is given as 76, her was born in Inverness, And his occupation is given as 'late supervisor of excise at Glasgow' He is buried in The Howff. For further information, look at www.fdca.org.uk Select Old Dundee graveyards, and The Howff. The Howff was a major burial ground in Dundee, especially prior to about the 1850's, and all the burials are transcribed here. It has a wealth of information, and is free. I am aware of a CUMMING, JAMES (d. 1827), excise official in the India Office, but he is described son of Alexander Cumming (so not my James?). The name on all other trees on Ancestry of James's father is given as Duncan with no other details. You can see most of the info I have on my tree. I am looking for information on the burial location of the above named person, as it is unknown to me. My name is JL Colville, my E-mail address is shown above. Thank you.
hi folks, I found a very few references to "the lands of Harlawshiels" in Forgan Fife. One reference had the name "David Walker" associated with it about 1714.. a book at British Library which is unavailable online. I will join Fife rootsweb to investigate further, thanks Liz of BC Canada
dear listers, I have been trying to find a locale near Newport-on-Tay in the parish of Forgan, Fife. I believe David Walker, who had at least 10 children baptized at Forgan, might have been my MARGARET WALKER's father [Mrs Margaret Walker of Meik/Drimmie fame]. From other baptisms and from Sasines, I did learn last year that Margaret Walker's father was David...in 1736 her father was described as "in" Newport Dundee". I also learned there was a "grand uncle" John Walker, witness/or named after, at baptism of Margaret's grandson, John Skinner, son to Isabel Meik Skinner in Dundee 1753. Therefore, Margaret Walker should have had a brother named John Walker. I have found therefore, baptisms for children of a David Walker [no wife mentioned]...who had both a "John" and a "Margaret". In at least 5 of the baptisms, the father, David Walker, is described as "of" "Harlashiols"?...[1704, 1708, 1710, 1712, and 1714]. I have searched all over for "Harlashiols" which could have been "Harlowshiols" or "Harlons?hiolls" "Harlasheels"...I cannot read this word clearly, but it appears in similar script in each of the 5 baptisms. I have tried various old maps with no luck. A baptism for 1718 for Christian Walker to David, has him "heritor of Harlasheels" but another baptism 1820 for Katharine has David "in" "Harlasheels". I would appreciate any help you could offer. I am rather encouraged to believe this is "my" David Walker because Margaret first married Mr John Meik, Laird of Drimmie in 1728. thanks Liz Barker of Canada
The parents, David Swankie and Isabella Cargill, according to my own database, married 12 Nov 1880, St. Vigeans parish, Angus. I have a note of a daughter, Mary Cargill Swankie, born 4 March 1884, Arbroath, died 14 Aug 1946, Arbroath. She married a James Jameson, 30 Dec 1904, Arbroath. Unfortunately, I have nothing on the son, Daniel Swankie. Regards, Gordon Johnson.
