Author: beesnblossoms69 Surnames: Lundie Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/6027/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am researching my 2xgreat grandfather, James Laird Lundie (born abt 1836 in either Angus or Perth, Scotland). He was married in London in the 1860's, but on his marriage certificate, he lists his father as a William Lundie. I made an assumption and determined that perhaps his middle name is the same as his mother's maiden name. Searching the Scottish marriage records, I found a William Lundie (born 1800) who married Janet Laird. I have the 1841 Scottish census which shows William and Janet Lundie living in Angus with several children including James. I also have the 1851 census showing Janet as wife with James still living at home. William (sr) is not listed, although Janet is not listed as a widow, so I don't think William had died. I think William Lundie was a Station Master at some point, later in his life. This was the occupation listed on James' marriage certificate. Anyway, I couldn't find birth records for James or a number of his siblings. If anyone has any information, I would appreciate it. Thanks! Do you know where in Scotland your Joseph was born? Or the names of his parents? There are five recorded Joseph Leslies born in Scotland between 1775 and 1785; there may also be unrecorded ones. 1. son of George Leslie, baptised in Rothes, Moray on 9 November 1775 2. son of James Leslie and Margaret Douglas, baptised in Rothes, Moray on 16 January 1776 3. son of George Leslie, baptised in Leochel Cushnie, Aberdeenshire, on 27 March 1781 4. son of John Leslie and Margaret Brown, baptised on 2 July 1785 in Duffus, Moray 5. son of Joseph Lesly, baptised in Leochel Cushnie, Aberdeenshire, on 27 June 1785 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hmmm. Generally speaking, children were baptised in the parish where the parents normally lived, so if some of the children of a particular couple were baptised in one parish and some in another parish, that is usually an indication that the parents had moved from one parish to another. However it isn't hard and fast, and there could be lots of reasons why a child might be baptised in a parish other than that of its parents' domicile. Sometimes a young woman expecting her first child would go to her parents' home for the birth; in some places, the kirk of the neighbouring parish may be nearer, or easier to get to, than the kirk of the parish of residence; a minister might be ill or absent, and the parents might get the child baptised by a neighbouring minister; the parents might have some exceptional tie to another parish. Once you have looked up all the original baptisms and seen what they say, you might have a better idea of the reasons. I took early retirement in 2005 and have been researching all branches of my family since then. Scotlandspeople is an absolute treasure chest and I am its number 1 fan! I live in England but my family still live in Dundee and my brother in Edinburgh, so when I visit, I usually end up booking myself into the Scotlandspeople Centre for at least a day or two and I use their site at least once or twice a week. I am so pleased you contacted me and am so interested in your branch of the Milnes...daughter Mary? I would be most grateful if you could fill me in with any information and descendants...I can't seem to find a family tree for your family..how long have you been researching this side of the family? I only have a vague birth date from the IGI for Mary as 1848? Do you have any other information? If I can help in any way please let me know, and I look forward to hearing from you again.
