The website is remarkably coy about costs, but my recollection is that it is £20 per A3 sheet. You can see the same maps (Ordnance Survey 6" 186x/7x survey) at: http://www.nls.uk/maps/os/6inch/index.html with quite a usable (free) onscreen display if you go for the "Google Maps" interface. You can also order printouts and downloads for considerably less than old-maps charges. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [ANGUS] Re HEGGIE or HAGGIE surname in Perthshire
    2. Lorna Kinnaird
    3. Dear All, HAGGIE or HEGGIE surname in Perthshire I'm trying to trace my HEGGIE or HAGGIE family from Perthshire (Arngask, Dunbarney, Kintillo Abernethy, Kinross)up to the present day - and I must say I am struggling! I know that their surname was spelt HAGGIE and not HEGGIE early in the 18th Century -but I don't appear to be able to get back further than 1738 and this is really frustrating. This is the earliest record I have at the moment- John Haggie or Heggie, b. abt 1738, Arngask m. Margaret Edward, b. abt 1740, Arngask - on 9th March 1765, Arngask They had at least one child:- John Haggie or Heggie, b. abt 1769, Arngask m. Margaret Whyte, b. abt 1760 - on. Dec 1787, Arngask They had at least four children: 1. William Haggie, b. 25th Jan 1791, Arngask/Westfordle m. m. Elisabeth McCalley, b. abt 1790/1796 They had five children: 1.1.Anne Haggie, b. abt 1824 1.2.Elisabeth Haggie, b. abt 1829 1.3. James Haggie, b. abt 1832, Arngask; d. 12th March 1896, Mount Pleasant, Monifeith m. Susan Fleming, b. abt 1822; d. 12th Feb 1907, Monifeith - on. 23rd August 1852, Dundee They had at least one child: David Fleming Heggie, b. d. 1925, Monifeith James was a Coal Merchant. His son D F Heggie was the informant. His death certificate shows his parents are William Heggie, Ploughman (deceased) and Elizabeth McCulley or McCally. Their marriage record is recorded under the surname 'Fleeming' instead of 'Fleming'. Susan was the daughter of David Fleming (Farmer) and Elisabeth Fleming, m.s. Ferguson. She died at 23 Jamieson Street, Monifeith. She was 85 years old. Again their son D F Heggie was the informant. 1.4.Thomas Haggie or Heggie, b. April 1835, Abernethy Thomas Haggie or Heggie, b. April 1835 at Abernethy m. Elizabeth McDougall They had three children: Janet Heggie (whom was my great-grandmother) William Heggie or Haggie who died in infancy John Heggie, b. 1861 - of whom I know nothing after the 1881 Census for Kintillo! 1.5. William Haggie, b. abt 1837 Does the above ring any bells with anyone on the list? Lorna Kinnaird Edinburgh, Scotland

Author: jlc379 Surnames: Buchan Dorman Gibb Ford Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/5476.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Lyndy, I believe I may be a descendant of this pair, though this is based on no solid evidence; just assumptions and deductions from searches on FamilySearch and FreeCen. Do you know if they also had daughters by the name of Ann and Jane? Through FreeCen, I was able to find a Buchan family in Arbroath in 1841 with 2 daughters Ann and Jane, parents Margaret and Robert, and now I see there is an Elizabeth too. So it looks like it may be the same family but these are also very common names. Let me know if these two ladies are familiar to you: My ancestor Ann Buchan went to San Francisco where she married William F. Dorman around 1860. Their daughter Mary Jane was the first of 5 generations of women to be born in San Francisco, myself being the 5th. Her sister Jane (possibly Jean) married James Gilchrist Gibb, and did not migrate that I know of. Her grandaughter Marjory Gibb Ford, however, did end up in San Francisco eventually and remained very close to my branch of the family until her death in 1986. I was lucky enough to know her, though at a young age. Regards, Jennifer Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: farfarloon Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/5505.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I had a look at this entry on Scotlands People. The "C" at the begining of the place name is a very ornate capital, a little outside the writer's style but there are only seven lines of script to judge by and there is not another capital "C". (The writer seems to have been replaced by an equally bad writer using a lower quality ink!) Very close scrutiny reveals that the second letter, thought to be "o" is in fact a bit of the writer's flourish on his "C" so the next letter is, apparently, "a". This makes the place name "Calershed" but what does this mean? It could be Caler's Head or maybe Caler Shade, both of which would be reasonable names. "Caller" according to a Scots Dictionary could mean "cool, fresh or healthy" in relation to a locality. I have had a look at some old maps of the area but nothing resembling that range of names can be seen. I have also looked through the oldest Valuation Roll available (120 years too late) but nothing in Kirriemuir and district even comes close though many of the old names used in the OPR can be identified. A recently published book of Kirriemuir place names was consulted and the nearest "sounds like" name that comes up is Cottarshade, said to be on the estate of Tarbirns below Pathhead. The ground lies on the west side of the road from Kirriemuir to Logie and no buildings exist now. Not much to go on but I hope it helps.
