Perhaps from a gravestone or a statement in the kirk session minutes? It is so easy to see names that fit dates and places, and assume they are the correct people "because they are the only ones" in the register". Even worse, if just taken from an index. Unfortunately, most of the registers are defective, and have gaps, damage, etc. and there may be another candidate to fit your tree who is missing. Gordon. I'll take your advice Gordon. Looks like it could be a long haul. Many thanks, Ann
A word of advice about the order within these rolls. I have recently had to use them to research past owners and tenants of my present house. It turned out that in the book, within each parish, you first get the estate or other major landowners, with all their properties; before the roll moves on to the smaller owners and owner-occupiers. As a result, if your ancestor was a tenant, he/she may be found under the list of properties owned by an estate, rather than where one would normally expect to find them in a roll. Roll on indexing of these! Happy hunting. Gordon Johnson
All: Delete this now if you don't want to read about other by-chance family connections. I'll have to read this book you suggested, Karen, as meeting cousin Mary by accident is not the first time this has happened to me. I came to know this man who lives about 6 miles from me via social gatherings. His family is from the Boston area. I said I came to that area outside Boston frequently because I had family there and many of my ancestors were from that area and I did genealogy. He revealed that his family was really into genealogy and provided names of his family. We both had BLAKEs in the family, but in the Boston area this is a common name. We continued to talk, and he (not a genealogist) said, "and there is this family named Childs." I just got goosebumps and the hair on my back stood on end. I told him to look at my arm (he is an ER physician) because my hair on my arms was just electrified, and the goosebumps were visible. James H. Childs the missionary? James Childs the minister? Wife Susan? He and I are 3rd cousins, and this helped me connect w/the last of my Mom's cousins that she couldn't really name (and information was conflicting). I said your grandfather lived on XX Elwood Street in ZZ, New York, and he had five children -- 4 girls, one no longer living, and a son of the same name -- he was astounded ... how did you know that??? Well, I've been looking for your family for 4 years! Pretty cool! I went to their family reunion a few years ago in CO. Lots of fun! I brought a pix of our GGG-GF and other pix of the family, as well as letters from about 1850 to 1900 or so, describing our ADAMS and LONGFELLOW ancestors' service in the Rev War. As to ANGUS. My cousin and I managed to find our Dads' 2nd cousin, Jim Low in Dundee 45 years after my grandparents had visited them there in the 1960s. The address came from my grandmother's 1st cousin (unrelated to the Scotish folks) (from CA) travelled with my grandparents at that time and kept information on MY family as well as hers, even the bus routes that stopped near the houses, still having it 45 years later!! And, she and I were connected by common descendants of my DAVIES family in England, so that was quite a bit of "chances" that allowed us to meet Jimmy! Life is good! A delightful "accident" as I had not told Marilyn about our trip to Wash, D.C. We had planned the week previous, as we were remarried in Fergus (and had concentrated on the wedding details). I just can't believe that we met....accidentally! Mary In a message dated 2/18/2009 1:33:45 P.M. I saw that she had signed in a few lines above me and just gasped. We had never met and so neither of us knew what the other looked like. I talked w/3 staffers, and said my cousin from Oregon is here! They responded that there were many people of similar names. I said not that live on this street in this city in Oregon! I knew she was there -- somewhere! I had been headed off to the main MF reading room, but would take two steps and stop -- this happened several times. I just could not leave the main entry area. Then I turned around 180 degrees and walked straight up to this woman I'd never seen before and said -- are you Mary Powrie [last name]??? And ... she said yes. (The 3 staff people just had their jaws hanging wide open!) It was truly amazing! (She and I could not see each other from the sign in table). So .... things do happen for a reason! Actually there's a book about this, believe it or not! Psychic Roots (by Henry Jones) is all about the influence of coincidence and serendipity on genealogical research, the chance combination of events over which the researcher has no control but which nevertheless guides him to a fortuitous discovery. Certainly chance or dumb luck sometimes leads us straight to a record kept in an improbable place, to an ancestor's second wife we didn't know anything about, and so on. Is it luck? Coincidence? A few weeks ago I asked the List if anyone could advise me about the commercial sources of personal data (and received a lot of advice to leave them alone) in order to get some missing information on a relative. I had the date of his death, 1944, but did not know where he was buried or who in the way of family might be buried with him. Neglecting him for the time being I asked a cousin in Toronto to call at the office of a cemetery fairly close to him and find out when "un-named twins" were buried in a family grave I already know something about. He got this information and whatever else he could find on the record card and decided to look for the mother, a Dorward, not knowing that she had been born in Aberdeenshire, been recorded as Durward (as they tend to do there) and used that form of her surname all her life. So naturally her record was didn't turn up (she is in the family plot). So, thinking he had maybe got her first name wrong, he asked if there were any other Dorwards in the cemetery and was stunned to find that the missing man was buried in another part of the same cemetery as his sister. So I am one step down the road on that person. I have also recently traced another missing relative in Canada by a pure fluke. I got a copy of a very detailed obituary giving the married surnames of the lady's children and grandchildren. Two of the grandchildren have unusual surnames so I figured that it would be easier to single them out as there might only be two or three families. I looked at Canada411 (on-line telephone directory) and found only one entry in the whole of the country for one of them ... and with the right initial. I wrote to him/her and got an e-mail reply from her mother checking me out! After a short exchange of information it turned out I had got the right family and was put in touch with her grand-mother, the person I was looking for. This was thanks to two spelling errors. The Toronto "Globe & Mail" (or the undertaker) had spelt the surname wrongly in the obituary and Canada411 had made the same mistake in the grand-daughter's entry. But for these errors I would never have found this family. In this game you never know where the next bit of information will come from! Cheers, Bruce D
