Since Sylvester listed angus co. when he was captured, that's where I feel his parents were from, also when he married in Virginia, he listed his religon as Quaker, but I feel he was a Quaker only after getting married. Alice's parents were Quakers. I will try the sources you listed,(Great information) Again, thank you so much. Debbie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I would recommend a survey of where in Scotland the Profitt (various spellings) surname is found around 1700, and use that as a basis for surmise as to his place of birth. Sources such as the Register of the Pry Council of Scotland; Register of the Great Seal of Scotland, etc. A look at Black's "Surnames of Scotland" would suggest that the counties of Aberdeen down to Angus might be a fruitful area. The IGI has only 19 PROFIT etc entries in Perth plus the Sylvester ones which are all "sealed" by LDS members so not readable. Two males were born in the 1650s and may be parents of your Sylvester. It would be worth looking at the OPR Film for the time to see it, by chance Sylvester is named as a witness to another birth. The writing will be very different so you may need an expert - or a crash course - to be sure you get the import of the entries. The 11 Sylvester entries are all "sealed" by LDS members so not readable. There are 734 entries for PROFIT etc in Angus. One can't narrow the search down by dates and I haven't studied the whole list but there are many around 1690 so there are records! It might be worth your while firstly examining the list for clusters of the PROFIT surname in whatever parishes are listed for the time. Then secondly looking at the OPR films of the time [or getting an expert to do it: the writing will be very different!] again looking for witness names for births [if any]. You may with luck find a mention of your Sylvester before he left and with more luck a habitation name. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The prisoners were confined in the church and fed on bread and water for a month, at the expense of the townspeople. Some were transferred to Lancaster Castle and some taken to Liverpool and tried. Around fifty died in prison. In December, four officers were shot and local volunteers were hanged at Preston, Garstang, Wigan Lancaster, Manchester and Liverpool http://www.scotwars.com/html/battle_of_preston_1715.htm According to a receipt given to the commissary general of the rebel prisoners, 639 prisoners were transported, but, for reasons unknown, only 636 were named in the manifest four of them Duncans. It should be noted that not all prisoners reached the destinations originally designated.http://www.clan-duncan.co.uk/prisoners.html This book should have some interesting background: Sankey, Margaret D. (Margaret Diane), 1974-. Jacobite prisoners of the 1715 rebellion : preventing and punishing insurrection in early Hanoverian Britain. Aldershot: Ashgate, 2005. xix, 176 p. ISBN 0754636313. The National Archives at Kew publish on their website a Guide to Jacobite Sources http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=87&j=1 Much of the material referred to relates to the '45 rather than the '15. Most of the material held by the Naional Library of Scotland also relates to the '45, including many of thee original sources for The Prisoners of the '45, edited by B G Seton and J G Arnot (Scottish History Society, 3rd series, vols XIII-XV, 1928-1929). The State Papers and the Baga de Sectretis have been microfilmed and may be available in Virginia. A PROFIT does appear for the '45 in David Dobson's 'The Jacobites of Angus Part Two': PROPHET, Thomas workman in Balmuckity, Kirriemuir, soldier of Ogilvy's Regiment 1745. His source is the 'Muster Roll of the Forfarshire or Lord Ogilvy's Regiment' by A Mackintosh - which source adds that Thomas returned 'Home', and that in turn is from the list drawn up by Ministers of those who surrendered their arms to them in an amnesty (originals in National Library of Scotland). In most cases 'workman' means a sub-tenant or labourer. all the best John

    3. Today's Anglo-Celtic Connections blog has two interesting items http://anglo-celtic-connections.blogspot.com/2009/03/tna-podcast- tracing-scottish-ancestors.html This podcast presentation by Audrey Collins describes the records held at The (UK) National Archives (TNA), some now available online through cooperative digitization projects, that may have information on Scottish ancestors. For Scottish ancestors who served with the UK government, be it in the military (Army, Royal Navy, Air Force), merchant navy, coast guard or customs and excise, TNA is the place to look for their occupational records. Also mentioned are PCC wills, non-parochial records, out-bound and in- bound passenger lists. Prisoner records from the 1745 rebellion, maps and images are also covered. Not mentioned, because they are not held at TNA, are records of the India Office and East India Company held at the British Library, and records for the Hudson's Bay Company (also at Library and Archives Canada) both of which recruited in Scotland. ALSO http://anglo-celtic-connections.blogspot.com/2009/03/four-greater- london-boroughs-havering.html This is a pay for site but the search might be helpful anyway. Four Greater London Boroughs, Havering, Brent, Islington and Camden, have added data at Deceased Online. Arlene

Author: Forfarian Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/5540.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: If he was a Jacobite, there is a strong possibility that he and his family were not adherents of the Church of Scotland. Many Jacobites were Episcopalian, which helps to explain why their baptisms don't appear in the Church of Scotland registers (though it's not the only reason). However if he was captured at Preston, then it's possible that there could be something on him in the National Archives at Kew in London. Good luck! Since I live in Virginia I have all his records from the time he arrived in 1716 on the boat the Elizabeth and Ann. He was a Jacobite and was captured in Preston and shipped out and I even have a copy of his will, from 1767. It's just so hard not to be able to connect him with anyone in Scotland. I've tried several of the sites you listed but no luck. I hope to come to Scotland in 3 years, maybe I can search records when I get there. I wish I did know someone that lived in Scotland that could do some research for me. I tried one but they only go back so far and weren't willing to search back to 1698. I just want to connect him with the names of his parents and where they lived, so when I get to Scotland I can walk on the same ground Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Forfarian Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/5540.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Ah, yes. I have had a further look and all the entries in the IGI do refer to the same person, though there is a remarkable lack of unanimity about his date and place of birth, his date of marriage and even the exact date of his death, suggesting that much of the information in the IGI is guesswork. Only the year and place of his death seem to agree. The principal source of information about births in Scotland before 1855 is the registers of baptism kept by the Church of Scotland. Few of these survive from before 1700; there is a list of parishes, with the dates of surviving records, at http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/hlpsrch/opr-cov.html You can search the parish registers online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. However I am not hopeful of finding a baptism entry for your Silvester Prophet. A search of the online indexes returned no results. Other churches also kept baptismal registers, but very few, if any, have survived from the 17th century. Most of those which have survived are in the care of the National Archives of Scotland www.nas.gov.uk. On the Scotland's People site there are searchable indexes to wills and testaments, and there are a few Prophets listed, but no Silvester. All of them are testaments dative, which means that they are not wills written during the lifetime of the person who has died, so they are unlikely to contain extensive lists of beneficiaries There may be other sources which could shed light on Silvester Prophet in the National Archives of Scotland www.nas.gov.uk but most of these are not online and you would need to get a searcher familiar with the archives to look on your behalf, because the majority of these documents are not online. The online catalogue has 103 references to Silvester and 94 to Sylvester, none of them your Silvester Prophet, but by no means everything in the archives is in the online catalogue. You may also like to check the National Archives in London http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/. Again, to search there you would have to get someone to go on your behalf. If you have got back to around 1700, you have got much further back than most people with Scots ancestors. Unless Silvester was from a wealthy or landowning family, or had a criminal record, the likelihood of finding much information about him is small.
