Which ones are "the people"? "ovington1_1" has listed two distinct Robert SOUTARs: one born c.1858 and one born c.1838. The latter one was a doctor who would better fit your original query except that his birth precedes the marriage by 17 years. The 1858 Robert was an unemployed painter in 1881 so could he have become a doctor? Possibly the older Robert was a cousin whom he followed into the medical profession in his 20s or even later. Author: Ray7033 Surnames: Soutar Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/5544.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In the 1881 Census a Margaret SOUTAR, widow, aged 57 is living at 13 Church St, Dundee. With her she has an unmarried daughter, Euphemia aged 25, seamstress, blind and an unmarried son, Robert aged 23 [i.e. born 1858-ish], an unemployed painter. The ages and mother's name are right but the son's occupation doesn't look hopeful as a precursor to becoming a doctor. There are no other likely Robert SOUTARs in the 1881 Census for the Scottish Highlands. If Thomas and Margaret were married in 1855 in Angus, you should be able to get their marriage certificate from Scotland's People to get their parents' names. 3. Hi Doreen Thanks for yours My problem at the moment is that I have nothing to link the David COOK in Aberdeen to my g.g.grandmother, there is no knowledge or history of any military connection, but there again there is no history *period* :-( It seems a huge leap of faith from an 1800 baptism in Aberdeen to my g.g.grandmothers reputed birthplace of Dundee in 1802, the only connecting factor is the names of David COOK and Jane STEEL There is also the chance that Dundee was the next place he was stationed The only thing going for the connection is that to my surprise David COOK appears to be not to common a name, I would have thought there would be thousands but not so it seems I will see if I can find anything on this Militia that the David belonged to, at least a sergeant has more chance of being found than your average squaddie Nothing surprises me anymore in genealogy so will see what I can find Appreciate your input Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) Nivard, the fact that this David Cook was in the army, and living in barracks, indicates that he was probably not from Aberdeen, but merely stationed there, so he could still well be from Dundee. 3. Hi Margaret And thank you , yes I had seen those but did wonder at the location, right side of the coast but a way up from Dundee, all I have for her fathers occupation is as given at her death as foreman, but of what I don't know? Fishing industry perhaps? My Jean gives her place of birth as Dundee throughout, it could be wrong if she perhaps moved early in life from Aberdeen but it does seem to be stretching things Her age I think is correct, she was eight years older than her husband and did nothing to hide that so if she were a few years older would that make any difference to her? I don't think so and if born 1799 she would be getting on a bit for her third at 42ish (says he the son of a 44 year old Mum but mine had some practice in as I am the tenth she had, she obviously realised what was causing the problem then as I am the last :-) There is a Jane COOK b1798 a servant born in Aberdeen in the 1851 census but the Ancestry transcript does not have the marital status so I cannot tell if she is unmarried, a widow or what I do know of the Jean/Jane naming in Scotland, I should do as I was raised by one Jean and married another :-) Appreciate your input Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > Dear Nivard, On family research there is a David COOK chr 3 Dec 1800 in > Aberdeen, Aberseen parents David COOK and Jean STEEL> Could be their > son. > I did a parent search. on them.
