Author: ANGELAH Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/5554/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Gale Group has digitized 19th Centure British Newspapers. I'm trying to find a subscription service that has access to these newspapers. Ancestry.com doesn't have it, Newspaperarchive.com doesn't, footnote doesn't, and of course my local libarary doesn't and won't sign up for the free trial either. Does anyone know of a subscription service that has access to these papers? I've googled without any luck. Thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. hi Doreen, I am looking for the following ROBERTSON children: they were not mentioned in their father's WILL of 1845, so I think they might have died young. I was looking for THOMAS [born 1794], JOHN [born 1801], ANN [ born 1804] and WILLIAM [born 1806] all to James Robertson and wife Margaret Ogilvie Robertson [who died before 1808 when James remarried]. Margaret Ogivlie Robertson died between 1806 and 1808 and I have not found her burial either. All children were at least born in Dundee. The FDCA link should have worked but didnt.. my computer and MY lack of expertise in techie things. If you are willing to do this lookup I would appreciate that. thanks liz On Apr 12, 2009, at 11:10 AM, DOREEN CUTHBERT wrote: > > Liz, > I just tried the link from Colin Speed, and it worked fine for me. > > Personally, when I am looking for the site I just use google to look > for FDCA - if it does not come up try google.co.uk - or of course just > key in www.fdca.org.uk > > > Once you get into the site, select databases, then the Howff. 3. Hi Liz, I have just tried the link below and got: 1. A page giving some background to the index and a table of links to the appropriate pages; 2. The alphabetical listing from Robb onwards .... If you were looking for James Robertson there is only one, age 20, who does not appear to be the one you are looking for. BUT ... I have not had to look for burials in Dundee and know that the Howff was the main burial ground. However, looking for something else I discovered that there were several other burial grounds in Dundee and district, mainly church yards, so you might have to consider that possibility. Dundee Council should have any surviving records but, sorry, I can't tell you how to get in touch with the appropriate department. 3. hi Bruce, actually I did find 'my" James Robertson Watchmaker, who died 1845 age 88, but was in fact looking for his children because in his WILL [1845] he only mentioned 2 children of 7, and then 4 grandsons of a deceased daughter...[she died of consumption aged 38] so I wondered if other siblings had also died young of TB. On OPR I got 68 "John Robertson" burials in Dundee between 1800 and 1841.!! I was looking for THOMAS [born 1794], JOHN [born 1801], ANN [ born 1804] and WILLIAM [born 1806] all to James Robertson and wife Margaret Ogilvie Robertson who died before 1808 when James remarried]. this all started for me because ScotlandsPeople put OPR deaths online recently and it is very useful if you know the year. thanks Liz On Apr 11, 2009, at 2:40 PM, Bruce Dorward wrote: > Hi Liz, > > I have just tried the link below and got: > 1. 1. [ANGUS] homes in Glasgow and in Angus or Perth? at the same time
    2. Harvie Barker
    3. I have two WILLS [Nicoll 1889 and Robertson 1845] where there are persons mentioned with two addresses: first, 1845, executor of the Will, son of James Robertson, JAMES, at both Glasgow [iron merchant] and at "GLenloin or Glen Lyon" Perth. second, 1889, JAMES ROBERTSON NICOLL at Glasgow, merchant and at Coupar Angus...he maintained two rental properties. [he had been an iron merchant in Dundee until 1861] my question is "why"...were they "country homes' for leisure? Does anyone have access to Glasgow or Dundee DIRECTORIES? or are any onllne? thanks Liz of BC Canada

    3. hi folks, I was able to download the letter "N" for Howff burials and find my Nicoll burials. [recorded I believe by Friends of Dundee City Archives] I am wondering if anyone knows if the letter "R" [eg Robertson] is available online? I cannot seem to call it up by Google. It would save me many dollars/pounds by doing this on ScotlandsPeople one by one...and I could narrow down my searches on ScotlandsPeople. thanks Liz of BC Canada

    1. [ANGUS] David LAMB & Anne LUNDIE
    2. Ian van Zyl
    3. I am having no luck tracing David LAMB who married Anne LUNDIE at St Vigeans on 20 Jan 1846. Can anyone help? David Lamb has been very difficult to research as I have not found a record of him in the Census alongside his wife or children. Without this I have no age to go on, as ages are not recorded in the Marriage Records. There are many David Lambs. The Banns and Marriages record says that David Lamb was from Arbroath. The most likely record I have so far is a death record of a David Lamb, Master Mariner, in the Marine Register dated 14 March 1882, but this does not explain his absense from all census records. This couple had, I think, 5 children: (2 found in Census & 3 only found in Scotlandspeople search) Jessie LAMB b 1847 Helen LAMB b 1849 Mary Jane Bone LAMB b 1852 David Charles F LAMB b1854 George Lundie LAMB b 1858 Wife Anne LUNDIE 1851 Scotland Census records Ann LAMB in Arbroath - shipmaster Wife, with children Helen & Jessie. I cannot find her death notice. Nor can I find her in any later Census records. As she had a child in 1858 her death should be recorded in Scotlandspeople. Daughter Jessie LAMB is found in 1861 Census with her grandmother and aunt Margaret Lundie in Arbroath. I can't find her after this although there are several possible marriages none are before the 1871 census. Daughter Helen LAMB b 1849 is not found again (Possibly died before 1854) Daughter Mary Jane Bone Lamb b 1852 died 1858 Oct 31st at 1 Grayfield Arbroath Parish, F, 5 years [parents] David Lamb, Shipmaster (Merchant Service) & Ann Lamb MN Lundie, [cause of death] Scarlatina Son David Charles F Lamb b1854 died 1858 probably also from Scarlet Fever Son George Lundie Lamb b1858 died 1858 probably also from Scarlet Fever Thanks for any information on this family Veronica in Canada

    1. Re: [ANGUS] "Kirkstyle" Kinfauns?
    2. Bruce Dorward
    3. I had the opportunity to look at the Concise Scots Dictionary today. Kirkstile (don't worry about the spelling, it probably varied from place to place or even from year to year) : The stile or narrow entry to a churchyard; (later) a meeting place where announcements would be made; the place where the beir was received prior to burial. In Forfar we have several churches one of which is the Parish Church. It can be approached by a stairway from the main street which leads to what is officially the main door of the church though in practise the majority of church-goers, the main parties at a wedding and the coffin following a funeral use another entry further up the hill which avoids the steps but leads to what probably was the back door. One or other of these, and I have never been sure which, was known as "the Auld Kirk Stile" ... but it has been a long time since I heard that used! I found my gg-grandfather, age 14, listed as a farm worker at Kirkstyle of Rescobie in the 1841 census. Rescobie church is only a few miles from me and I know the area well but I have not been able to identify an existing building as that residence. The old part of Rescobie burial ground is surrounded by a stone wall with a pedestrian gate allowing entry from the road as well as a wider entrance at the rear that would admit a small vehicle, such as a horse-drawn hearse. The track leading to the rear of the church, the rear of the Manse and building which at least one old map identifies as the school and farm on the hill above. For the want of a better idea I have concluded that this track, passing the entry to the church-yard, had been known as the Kirkstyle at the time. In the days before precise addresses and post codes this was probably close enough for anyone seeking out the local residents to start making enquiries.
