Hi Lesley Not sure its applicable in the case of the Works database but know there were/are export import problems with some Works data I have not used Works for some years but am aware there have been compatibility issues since then but cannot recall if it effects all parts of the package or just some Do you know if thats still the case? When I used to use it I was more than happy with it for what it did but have used MS Office since Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > > It's not freeware, but I keep all my BMDs in the database area of MS > Works. > > It's very simple and much more tolerant of errors and foibles than Access, > and > > still lets you search and sort on the different fields (eg sorting on > cause of death > > for my OPS immediately highlighted a couple of typoid outbreaks). > > Lesley Robertson
Hi Gordon Although I did not know Ken or his wife its sad to hear of the accident, my wifes father also died in America in 2002 due to a road accident while researching the native Indians there Regarding your software requirement , have you looked at freereg? They have some free software which may kill two birds with one stone, it is specifically made for the data capture from births, marriages & deaths and looks to be just what you are looking for, it would also enable you to add the same details captured to freereg without any further work Worth a look I would say Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) >I also heard the other day about Ken's death in a car crash, in an > e-mail from his daughter, who is trying to sort out his affairs. > Anyone who was in communication with Ken regarding Coulls, can still > contact me at <gordon@kinhelp.co.uk>, as I have the master database of > Coulls Perts, and other fisher families of Ferryden and Usan. Hi Nivard, I am happy with the info I have, my Grandad gave a lot of anecdotes and facts about the man not long before he died; taught me a real leason in speaking to people before we lose them. I also heard the other day about Ken's death in a car crash, in an e-mail from his daughter, who is trying to sort out his affairs. Anyone who was in communication with Ken regarding Coulls, can still contact me at <gordon@kinhelp.co.uk>, as I have the master database of Coulls Perts, and other fisher families of Ferryden and Usan. Hello All, I find it very interesting about the CGC acting quickly to rectify a mistake. I found a relative of mine killed during WW1 whose grave was not in their database at all, (in Dysart cemetery, Pitlochry as a matter of interest.) Hi Paul I have also had very good help from the CWGC but I don't think you can compare the two sites of the CWGC and Ancestry in any way As far as Ancestry are concerned they have a very wide spectrum of data to contend with, much of it in handwritten forms such as the census The writing in a lot of cases is problematic to say the least, so producing the quantity of records in a reasonable time scale is a hard task, I have said on many occasions I would rather have it now warts n all than wait for the perfect article (which is totally unrealistic anyway) What I believe makes Ancestry far and away the better site of the commercial offerings is the ability to search across all databases for more or less anything unlike the majority of other sites where you have to enter a surname as a minimum Ancestry also have a facility to enter corrected or alternative names on the census , I have used it many times and leaves the original but adds the alternative which is also searchable in the normal way, once you submit it takes a couple of weeks to come through on the search Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) >I pointed out an error in a relative's entry on the CGC website--next day I > received a personal reply and the correction was made the following week. > I > was very impressed with the response. Hi again Mary I just recieved my reply to the same enquiry as yours ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a known problem that has been reported to our developers. Feedback from you, our valued customer, helps us correct errors and improve the website. Your patience and efforts to assist us in this matter are appreciated. Please understand that fixes to errors on Ancestry are posted firstly in the order of those which affect the greatest number of users, and thereafter in the order in which they are reported. For this reason, fixes for some errors may take longer than others to be posted. You can register where you think mistakes have been made; on the census pages at least. I've flagged a few things and Ancestry posts an alternative entry alongside the original one. They don't do it straight away though - it can take a few weeks. Mark, I've asked them several times to add info or correct info...and got stone-walled! I much prefer to post at Scots at War. I have 32 soldiers who died, ancestry had 3 of them, CGC had 7. I have added what I learned to the various Rolls of Honour, specifically Dundee. _http://www.scotsatwar.org.uk/_ (http://www.scotsatwar.org.uk/) you can add bios and photos _http://www.cwgc.org/_ (http://www.cwgc.org/) they are an excellent organization which looks out for graves and memorials, but even with documents like paybook will (which I found at the NAS-national archive of Scotland). _http://www.nas.gov.uk/_ (http://www.nas.gov.uk/) _http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/roh/main.htm_ (http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/roh/main.htm) I have 7 WWII deaths...and I posted all of them here. There are 54 Powrie's who served in WWI. Ancestry.com has their "medal cards" from which I got Regiment, Battalion and Personal number, which I used to look up each at the PRO. I also used the PRO reference numbers for births and marriages for military men..which I found on Find my past. _http://www.findmypast.com/_ (http://www.findmypast.com/) Waterloo death found No where else! _http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.htm_ (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.htm) Public Records Office. Military records are frustrating, and since I'm employing a professional (Richard Mole) whose work has been exemplary, it can be expensive, but I'm only looking for next of kin... so he's offered me a discount, and only copies what I'm after. _http://www.richardmoles.com/clientcomments.html_ (http://www.richardmoles.com/clientcomments.html) If anyone wants specifics, I found my Boer War soldiers using the Newspapers of Dundee.... it was rewarding but took me three years to link my last soldier. Boer War soldiers are not listed on CGC website and all records were burned during the Blitz. Luckily all were Blackwatch.... They all died for me, so they are worth every bit, and they'll never be forgotten after my book is published. I even found three Powries who entered West Point just after the civil war, and I found a photo of the cadet's room in the 1880's. Mary My WWI soldier that I even sent to a CGC written hearing, fought all through WWI, as a gunner was even awarded an MM. He thought he be sent home but was sent to Poland and died in Nov 1921, after the "official" end of WWI. He went "insane" after going deaf, and killed himself with three others from their unit. They knew nothing of Post-Traumatic stress, but instead of going home to Perth, he's buried in Germany, and is "unfit" for being listed on CGC website. They suggested I add him to a WWII list, but I got refused as he didn't meet "their Dates"! He served for 8 years, won a medal, his hearing, wounded twice, and finally his mind and life! I will always think of Ernest Powrie as a hero....but he is not listed on any roll! In a message dated 4/13/2009 12:56:33 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, mervally@f2s.com writes: Hello All, I find it very interesting about the CGC acting quickly to rectify a mistake.
