    1. Re: [ANGUS] Thomas Powrie - Ship-owner Dundee
    2. I have a John Powrie buried at the Howff, Dundee. I found it hard to believe because of his age....but it has to be true. 2500 Powrie John 3 Jun 1838 27 Dundee Shipmaster Consumption Old Howff Thomas Powrie senior, merchant and shipowner - I hadn't referred to this in my previous e-mail, but I have now located a testamentary record concerning him. He died in 1848 in Dundee, and left no will. His lengthy inventory (5 pages) and short confirmation of executors names only the following relatives: James Powrie of Reswallie, nephew; Mrs Margaret Powrie or Soot, spouse of James Soot merchant in Dundee, niece; and Janet Powrie, residing in Dundee, niece. This family of Reswallie House in Rescobie parish were the original heirs to the Powrie, Coat of Arms. I have both the one in 1375, and this one in 1856, If you want to see it. They are very nice and on Scotlandspeople. When I had asked the Lyon's court for them,I got a typed transcript, and told I couldn't see the artwork. When they went online, I was delighted to see they had the artwork with them. Mary In a message dated 4/16/2009 5:57:15 A.M. 1. [ANGUS] Ensign John NICOLL, b 1759, Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland
    2. Sandi Bellefeuille
    3. Hello folks:   John Nicoll (Ensign) was born in Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland about 1759. (The year was figured from his Army Records-he recieved his Ensign Commission-22 Jan 1807, where he gave his age as 48 years old.) .    He went to Guernsey and joined the 5th Royal Veteran's Battalion stationed there. He met and married Mary Knight @ St. Martin's Parish, St. Peter's Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands, the 10th of May 1783.    John's Army record shows that 4 children were born in Guernsey: Alexander-25 May 1795; James-7 Nov 1798; Peter-5 Nov 1800; Mary-29 Nov 1803. The 1st child, John, born about 1788, and the last, Harriet Headley, born about 1805, were not listed.   >From Guernsey, John & family came to Quebec (having to over-winter in Nova Scotia), c 1808-10 (his wife Mary supposedly died in Quebec in 1810).  He remained at the garrison in Quebec until his regiment was disbanded in 1821.  He was given a land grant for his service in Canada and settled in Perth, Ontario, where he re-married Dorothy McPhail in 1820.   I am attempting to find out who John's parents were - I have been given information that his father was also John and his father was James however, I have no definitive proof.  Can someone steer me in the right direction?   Many thanks   Sandi Bellefeuille, Mississauga, Ontario Canada

I was always told that one of my grandmother's grandfather's was a ship captain. Had to be John Powrie, since the other (DAVIES) I know to have worked in the mills in the middle of England, while John was in Dundee. 2. Arlene Halme
    3. Have next to no information on J. Malcolm Balfour except that he sent a postcard in 1906 to my great uncle Alexander Malcolm who was on his way to New York City. He appears to be either a relation or a work mate from the photo of a group on the front of the postcard. Could not detect him on the 1901 Census as am also unsure of his age. But as a long shot was hoping there might be someone searching Balfours who has someone in their collect who might have been mid 20's in 1906 that might fit. Arlene

    3. Hi again If I remember correctly it was an issue that other programs, Word included could not read or open Works documents or saved data Using other methods of saving should have no effect Can't say I had a problem with Access but have not had the need to use it for some time (which is a good job as my Office SBE does not have it <g>) Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > I've never had any trouble with Works - I usually import via comma > separated asci files > > or Works files.
