I have an Elizabeth Lousen who married Peter Donald date unknown, place unknown. I do know they had twin sons, David (my ancestor) and John, christened 12 July 1796 in Lintrathen. Can anyone tell me about the Lousen name? Is it connected to Lowson or some other spelling? I haven't started to do any research on either Peter Donald or Elizabeth Lousen's parents, and I guess I should get started. Barbara, I appreciate your offer to look up names of Dundee mariners. My gr gr grandfather, JAMES WEST was a whaler out of Dundee. He was a young man and served somewhere between 1853 and 1862. Subject: Re: [ANGUS] Dundee mariners > Can you tell me what years this covered please > Thanks > Berry Berry "Mariners of Dundee - Their City - Their River - Their Fraternity" by Hamish Robertson The Fraternity is a very old one. My friend Hamish once told me :: QUOTE First mention of a Seamen's Fraternity was in 1554 when the Burgesses of the town of Dundee requested Dundee Ship Masters and Seamen to form an organisation to levy dues, or taxes, on arriving and departing ships. In due course the Fraternity became responsible for pilotage on River Tay and installing buoys and lighthouses for the safety of ships and seamen. In this role the Fraternity built lighthouses at Buddonness and Tayport. Although the role of the Fraternity has declined since the 1840s, there remains a resolute membership of 70 mariners dedicated to maintaining the original concepts and responsibilities. END Entries in his book span those years - not a complete record, of course, Many time just a listing of those attending a meeting, being accepting into the Fraternity and etc. He published his book in 2006 Regards Barbara Neish Bermuda

The one born 1841 was baptised simply as Joseph, but must have assumed the Mearns middle name, as he appears with it in his obituary (Aberdeen Journal, 27 March 1920, page 6). Married to Jean Baxter, they had 9 children, buty I only have descent from 2 of them (Jane Kydd Coull and Margaret Malcolm Coull). Hi Barbara, The book sounds really interesting, especially as I seem to have countless mariners in my own ancestry! I wonder, are there any TOSHes mentioned in the book? My TOSHes all seem to have been Dundee mariners, right up to James TOSH (1817-1878). Any info on the TOSHes would be eagerly and gratefully received! ;-) Best wishes, Sue
