Author: maryschacht Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/5564.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The next building charter recorded in the Chartulary refers to the same street ; and by which Abbot Bernard, in 1318, granted a parcel of land in Cobgat to Galfrid Clulbydheued, burgess of Aberbrothoc, for twelve pennies of sterlings, as before. The name Cowgate, as applied to this street, has been lost for ages in common discourse, but its representative is still retained in the writings of the proprietors on the lower part of the High Street, under the altered form of Copegate. The Chartulary shows how the old name Cougate, (our fathers wrote their single u as we now write v, Covgate), successively appears as Cobgate, Copgait, and Copegate. Abbot Bernard inserted a clause in his charter, which is signifi- cant of his active character. He bound the feuar to build a house upon the land granted to him, with a front according to the usage of the burgh, within the first three years. found this just searching the web for copegate, Arbroath, you never know it could be a local B and B. I had for forgotten when the records for military stopped being housed in the National Archives (NAS) to PRO (England's Archive) I thought it was THE UNION 1707....but I'm a Yank after all...(rats!no accent, stuck with Bush) so 1763 is date. learn every day and help someone, so you can count your life in friends not in days. Our ancestor's lives are not the "book-end" dates that bracket their lives but the book that lies between...so learning about their experiences and the times they lived through is as important as looking for records. I hate to be "judged" by my grandkids based on my driver's license photo and info! Abertay Historical is another gem. http://www.abertay.org.uk/ http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/square/ac940/weblibs.html uk public libraries on the web http://scurl.ac.uk/about/members.html confederation of Scottish research libraries http://www.uklibrariesplus.ac.uk/memarea.htm#scot university libraries Scotland http://www.uklibrariesplus.ac.uk/memarea.htm all uk university libraries http://www.scit.wlv.ac.uk/ukinfo/ac/index.php?refs1065=(none) My Favorite an interactive map of the U.K. that takes you to that city university website. As an ex-software engineer..I'm impressed. http://www.scran.ac.uk/ Scottish Cultural Resources Network... see what the regiment uniform looked like, search by village or trade, by surname... Their CD's on the History of the Scottish people are excellent. Subscription helps Scottish teachers and an excellent site for us. Family History Societies have publication on ancestor's lives. I use the links page of the Association of Scottish Family History Societies to move easily between. Don't assume you will only find something in Perth. The Aberdeen FHS is the oldest in Scotland and did the entire country for a long time. I found a rare 1700 book on Fergus, Ontario there where my Perthshire born great grandfather had emigrated that was not available in the National library of Canada in Ottawa! Never assume. Try the Federation of British FHS....they have directories of Internet sites for shut ins like me. Mary in Oregon Ebertay has some neat publications. http://www.safhs.org.uk/ Scottish Family History Societies http://www.armymuseums.co.uk/regiment.htm Regimental museum list...I'd lost this full list of what museums have which regiments...if they don't have their own like Balhousie Castle, Blackwatch museum in Perth. There is a memorial on Powrie Brae to the Blackwatch.. just outside Dundee. http://www.cyndislist.com/miluk.htm#Libraries more ideas Genuki has them too Feel closer to them, buy a relica or antique regimental badge, the regimental music, books on the regimental history. hope you can find some help in all my chatter! Author: maryschacht Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.ans.general/5564.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: look at both SCRAN and RCAHMS for photos. I use Multimap, streetmap and old map. If you look carefully at the Internet interactive program, (I use Uk streetmap, multimap and old maps of Scotland. The last is a great resource but takes a long time to load. You pop in the nearest village or town, and then just move the cursor in any direction. The old maps are sold as reprints online, and from most family history society. Sassines (land inheritance records unique to Scotland) are housed at the NAS. If your family owned the property, you might find records at the National Archive. Anyone suggest a place to look for rental agreements, tax information or land evaluation? SCRAN often has old photos of buildings, as does RCAHMS, royal commision on Ancient and historic monuments of Scotland. http://www.multimap.com/maps/ www.streetmap.co.uk/ http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ http://www.nas.gov.uk/ National archive of Scotland www.rcahms.gov.uk/ www.scran.ac.uk/ SCRAN has begun adding documents like forfeit estate lists after the Jacobite Revolutions. I doubt if a hand loom weaver would have enough money for an estate... but leave no stone uncovered. I learned much about the trade at the Glasgow weaving cottage. It's near Glasgow, and the weaver worked in wool, rather than linen (woven from flax) which is more likely, but unknown about your particular weaver. I bought my reproduction of about 1850 era, from Tayvalley family history society. At a couple pounds each, they are good deal for researching. If that doesn't work contact the libraries. I got a great map of Dundee showing all the parish boundaries around 1850, from the Dundee central public Library. I'll write another post next on library websites. Dan, I tried the monument inscriptions for Arbroath, in fact the Angus seacoast. None of the Jenkins match yours. But so few buried in a cemetery had stones, you should look for burials. they are likely buried without a stone like 99% of Scots. If you need the death records, they are on Scotlandspeople. Sorry I couldn't be more help, but I have no doubt that someone can give you where to write for Arbroath burials. Mary in Oregon In a message dated 4/21/2009 4:35:49 P.M.
