The 1881 census lists Thomas Gardiner, cabinet maker, age 35, born Perth at 35 Stirling Street, Dundee with wife Euphemia, 31, born Perth, and children Isabella, Thomas, Margaret, Euphemia, and James. Euphemia's age is given as 5, which means she would have been born in 1875/6. You should be able to get her birth certificate at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk I have noticed that it is very common for ages in the Canadian census to be a year out, so maybe a mistake was made on her gravestone. The International Genealogical Index at www.familysearch.org lists 7 children of Thomas Gardiner and Margaret Clark, all born in Perth between 1841 and 1862. As Thomas and Margaret were evidently both alive in 1861, you should be able to get their death certificates from the same web site. These will tell you who their parents were. The IGI also gives the date of their marriage as 12 June 1840. Unfortunately there is as yet no transcription of the 1841 or 1851 census of Perth at http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl but you should be able to find these census details at Scotland's People too. Hi Arlene, I'm afraid that's what it looks like to me, although I could make out another letter at the end, so now it reads "Beatheaw". I wonder if its a place instead of an occupation. Hello. I have just discovered more roots. My father's people were Macgregors - though earlier McGregors. My Great-grandfather's mother was Matilda Webster. Daughter of John Webster, farmer and Margaret Largie. I haven't found their marriage yet, but I think they were from around Montrose. Matilda married my great-great grandfather December 26, 1856 in Glasgow. Her residence is listed as Academy Square, Montrose, and she was a domestic servant on her marriage certificate. I'm wondering if anyone has any connections with this family? And I found Academy Square on a map of Montrose, but wonder if there was a large house at the time where she might have been a servant? A witness was Alexander Morrice. Thank you for any help. when the 1911 census came out for England, I finally found my grandfather in London and his place of birth was Londonderry, NI. Which explains why I've never found his birth in Scotland or England. Closing in on finding out who I am. Dad's side of the family was a huge mystery with skeletons in the closet - or more obvious ones than the rest of the family.
