In the Statistical Account of Scotland (1793), the Rev Thomas constable notes that the parishes of Liff and Benvie were united in 1758, and that the older parishes of Logie and Invergowrie had been previously united to Liff. However the quoad sacra parish of Logie, including Blackness and Balgay, belonged to Dundee, because (he thought) some of the principal streets of Dundee had encroached on Logie. Fullarton's Gazetteer (1842) notes that the eastern part of the parish of Liff and Benvie belonged to the civil parish of Lochee. By 1901 a substantial part of the parish of Liff and Benvie had been built over by the expanding city of Dundee, so that a street address in that parish is usually also part of the city. In 1793, apart from the Church of Scotland, Liff and Benvie had a Seceder meeting house, but no minister to look after the 120 or so members of its congregation. No other denomination is mentioned in the Statistical Account. By 1901, there were almost certainly churches of other denominations in the Dundee part of Liff and Benvie. With Fowlis Wester, Invergowrie, and Logie. Logie and Invergowrie have been joined to Liff since the mid seventeenth century. Liff and Benvie were united in 1758. A photo of Liff Church is available on SCRAN. I have a photograph of the masons (profession not fraternity) of Liff, it doesn't identify my William Powrie by name but another, called the Dundee Stone cutter club does. I'm donating a copy of each to the Dundee Library. The men are holding chisels in one hand and large wooden mallets in the other. If anyone with a mason in the family wants a copy...let me know. _http://www.scran.ac.uk/database/record.php?usi=000-000-461-074-C&scache=3q9 uhal6o2&searchdb=scran_ (http://www.scran.ac.uk/database/record.php?usi=000-000-461-074-C&scache=3q9uhal6o2&searchdb=scran) I just received an email from lance corporal Forbes Powrie, born in 1912, that told me of trips taken with his father and grandfather to see the ship discovery to tell him of his grandfather's part in building it! a very welcome contact from my newsletter. My faith in family caring about our soldiers has been rewarded. Our link to the ship is finally established... Nice Birthday present for me. Mary in Oregon In a message dated 4/26/2009 1:15:54 P.M. Robert and Elizabeth had 10 children that I know of. Elizabeth Cuthbert Thomson was b. 1796, Forfar d/o James Cuthbert and Katherine Yeoman and d. 1873, Menmuir. I am a direct descendant of Elizabeth's brother, David. Hence, this is the line I've concentrated on for many years. Hi, Looking for "cousins". I am researching descendents and looking for the Pedigrees of James CAITHNESS and Susan CAITHNESS. They married in 1789 in Panbride. I suspect that James may have been born 1770 the son of James CAITHNESS and Jean CLARK but not confirmed at this stage. As a couple they had 7 children - Mary, Margaret, Jean, James, Susan, Catherine and Alexander. Mary, Susan and Catherine the only ones that I do not have a marriage and or death for. I descend via Alexander who married Margaret ROBERTSON in 1828 in Dundee. They lived in Dundee. Alex was a mariner and died at sea in 1842 and Margaret left Scotland sometime between, after the 1851 census and before the 1861 census. I am still to find this. Thank you Regards, Pat Wade (Nee King) Melb, Vic

Hello, does anyone on this list have any specific knowledge of the FENTON line which seems to reside at Tannadice prior to 1800? James FENTON & Elizabeth CRAMOND had several children there (mostly at a place called Sheal Green). I am particularly interested in the line descending from their son James (born abt 1795/6 although I can't find his baptism) who married a Betty HENRY (or HENDRY) and later moved to Brechin. They in turn had a son named George, who in turn had a son named Peter FENTON, a Flaxweaver, who seems to have moved to Arbroath. Any help in researching this family would be really appreciated. Duncan, Dundee

When William Lewis died the Lewis family moved back to Uddingston in Scotland where she met and married Aurelio (who had recently arrived in Scotland from Italy).
